Yes it can be rebarrelled to the same caliber. You need to buy a blank $600 then have a qualified person thread,chamber and fit, another $200 to 400 depending who does the work/has a reamer/guages and finally bluing or coating. No sights will set you back $1000. Why does the rifle need rebarrelled? If worn out then you'd be better to look for a good take off in a magnum caliber. Parker Hale also chambered in 300 Win Mag, 375 H&H and 458 Win Mag. Any of these will work in you set up. Ron
Stainless barrels are generally cheaper than Chrome Moly. I have had good work done by Corlanes on both my custom builds. Any gunsmith who does barrel installation should be able to help you out. If you go with a blued barrel the gunsmith needs to be able to do, or outsource the bluing phase as well. As rgg_7 pointed out expect to be in the $1000-$1200 range for the job (includes barrel pricing).
Make sure the barrel contour you choose will work with your barrel channel.

Send it to Bits of Pieces in Delta. The whole job shouldn't cost more than $700 depending on which barrel make you prefer. I've used a lot of Green Mount barrels which BOP carries and for a hunting rig they are as good as any for a lot less cash outlay.
OP, Some of the modern rifles being offered today will cost less new than it will to have a high end barrel fitted to your present rifle.

Hey thanks, I'll check them out. 700 ish is still a bit out of my realm..for now,but not much longer. I'll research it, akthough I can use the Parker as it is. It has grown on me lately. Something out of Seinfeld: it's so ugly, but I can't look away! Or something like that.

If the smith is going to the trouble of rebarrelling you might as well have the action trued up at the same time. That's the difference between a $700 rebarrel job and a $1000 rebarrel job. IMO the extra money is worth it.
You need an Mauser 98 barrel. If you can find a finished, short chambered one, you are good to go. Lots in the US at moderate prices, not so much here.

Not sure how difficult it would be to import a barrel from Brownells but it's a good way to go. Pre threaded and short chambered Shilen barrels. Many years ago, (OK decades ago) I did one in 35 Whelen. Back then you could bring in a barrel (and the finish reamer if required) without any import permits. They mailed straight to your door. The barrel was excellent quality ( for a hunting outfit ) and performed VERY well.
You still can import direct, but its a patience game, as well as a bit of a crapshoot on which manufacturers have actually seem fit to go through the Export process stateside.
If you want the current actual skinny on the whole lot, phone Brownells, talk to the nice person at the Export desk. If you cannot be bothered to talk to the person, you getthe generic answer from the website, which is "Can't", which is only actually correct for some things.
Most of the guys in the banner ads around the site here that carry barrels are ammortizing their paperwork costs and time across several items, and most of them are charging less than you would think, for their trouble.
