Re-barreling actions

I have two rifles that I want to get rebarreled, do the barrel manufacturers do the work or do they just provide the barrel and I have to find a smith to do the work ?

I want to replace the 20" barrel on my Dads PH .308 NM with a 26" or so barrel and I am also wanting to rebarrel my CF2 .308 to a 7-08.
 
Barrel manufacturers just sell blanks, sometimes profiled blanks, some places sell prethreaded barrels, I think green mountain out of the states might, but usually you need to get a blank off to a smith, he will thread it, profile it, cut it and crown it, he will also have to notch it inside the action for the ejector, you may want him to cut dovetails for sites or solder on something, or put fluting on it.

When all is said and done, the barrel will cost more then the rifle, this is not something one spends money on to keep things cheaper then buying a new rifle, have a search for gunsmiths in your area and make some calls for pricing, and look at reviews on this forum for them, some take years to get the work done.

Really? All the barrel blanks that I have purchased came profiled right from the barrel maker. My gunsmith just threads, chambers and crowns them for me. No extractor notch or drilling and tapping or soldering for sights. Match barrels are about $400 and change and add another $300+/- for fitting.

i guess that depends on what you want done and the type of rifle.
 
Ted Gaillard will fit his barrels or do complete builds, depending on the action and perhaps his mood at the time.;) One thing about it, its one stop shopping.

A Gaillard build is also considered proof of Saskatchewan residency.
 
Last time I spoke with gaillard was to re chamber a rifle to a 223 AI and he would not do it. But I will have to ask if he will completely rebarrel these for me. A 20" barrel in a .308 Norma is crazy, 26" will be much better.

Well, you must be shooting a savage then as you don't need an extractor notch, I said some were profiled but many are not, you don't bother with sites and thats great, but it's still a cost to be considered depending on what your doing.

Had a Savage once, never fired it, traded it for something else. I have a CG Millennium rifle, Remington, Wichita and a Musgrave, all of them single shot target rifles, none of them have an extractor notch. Maybe my gunsmith doesn't know what he is doing:confused: Everyone of them have iron sights. Rear sights fit on the actions and front sight are ladder sights that clamp to the barrel. The end if the barrels are turned down to fit the barrel band to attach the front sight. No drilling and tapping, or grooves needed.

Its not that likely he would take re-barrelling work on a Parker-Hale or a BSA either. Different guys specialize in different sorts of work, and with his bench-rest/accuracy/barrel-making background there's a powerful incentive to build rifles that shoot when they're done. Show up with a Remington, BAT, custom Remington clone, maybe a Sako and he's your guy. Gotta make the barrels look good.

A good move is to get Ted to make you a barrel, custom profiled to match your barrel channel and take that over to AC Douglas and get it fitted up there.
