I have an older, custom built FN bolt action in 300 Win Mag that I would like to rebarrell into a 6.5 cal. Reduced recoil and cartridge efficency are more important to me than velocity, so that rules out the 264 Win Mag. I'm thinking 6.5 Rem Mag. Barrell length? Twist? Cost? Any ideas?
Thanks
Frank

Been a long time but I think I once concluded that a 264Win Mag 125gr bullets could be downloaded with H870 to recoil levels similar to the 270 W...I believe there are loads that are pretty accurate and easy on barrels with H870 ... not sure a 6.5 Rem Mag would be worth the trouble given that you can duplicate it in a 264...having said that .. I have a 350 Rem Mag and often think that a nice combo would be a switch barrel with 6.5 and 350 mag calibres..

257 Wby, 264 Win, 270 Wby, 7mm Wtby or 7mm Rem Mag...take your pick..all will do what you ask...as someone mentioned, the 6.5 Rem Mag may present feeding problems as well as having lots of extra space in the mag box....

I would have no problem going with the 6.5 Rem Mag. I think it is a better choice than loading down a .264. the 6.5 Rem Mag in a standard length action and with a 24 inch barrel will exceed 3000 fps with 140's at reasonable pressures and with a variety of powders. I doubt feeding would be an issue. Or, you could load it down to be a 260! Regards, Bill.

Sounds to me like you want a 6.5 Swede. Very efficient cartridge with mild recoil.

Except he's ALREADY GOT a 300 WM. That means that the gun has been altered to feed magnum cases, as well as the bolt face opened up to accept them.

Therefore, by far the simplest modification would be to another belted magnum case, that fits in a full length action. Otherwise, there would be feeding hiccups guaranteed. Given that material has already been removed from the feed rails, it would be challenging to get it to feed anything smaller. Therefore, the economics would dictate that a new 6.5x55 sporter would be far cheaper than making the necessary modifications to this gun.
