re-blueing M9 pistol???

I've had my Beretta 92.F for many years, and the blueing is starting to fade on the barrel were the slide makes contact during the operation of the action.

I've seen re-blueing kits at CanadianTire and LeBarons...are these the best way to do it? I dont want to mess anything up.

Anybody done this before?
Any tips or recommendations?

Freeze!!

The best advice I can give you is to take your barrel to a gunsmith and have them hot-blue it - it won't be expensive ($40-$50?).

The stuff you buy in stores is only good for small parts (screws, bolts and scratches) You DO NOT want to cold-blue anything large - it WILL look like crap!

I second this.

An alternative to hot blueing from a gunsmith is to have the entire pistol redone in a teflon finish, which is what Beretta used originally for the slide on most 92F and 92FS pistols. Again, your gunsmith should be the place to go to for this.

G37 is correct in that cold blueing will yield poor results on anything large. I have tried the same course of action that you are considering on the barrel of my own aging Beretta, and the results weren't impressive at all. The only saving grace was that the offending touch-up was quickly worn off by shooting another box of ammo.

I have since left mine alone, but I do reccomend a professionally applied finish such as teflon or a bake-on finish such as Gun Kote, since it most closely matches the original finish and will be much more durable.

heck,it's only now begining to wear off the blue?- i've got a 92sb and it's had several touch ups with the oxo stuff- but then again i don't care what it looks like- when i sell it i'm going to replace the barrel anyway- my 948 has the same problem- it's just the nature of the beast- you'll always have some fading of the barrel due to the wear and tear- just like the action bars on a pump shotgun
