Does anyone know who would re-bore a Colt SAA barrel for an antique revolver, in Canada? I have an 1878, in 476 cal. that has a groove diameter of .435, and should be .454( cylinder throats are .458.

Probably many can ream the bore larger it but I am assuming you want it rifled as well? You need to find a barrel maker who does cut rifling and would take it on... I think this is going to be a tough task.

Yeah ,difficulty finding a barrel maker that will re-bore is proving to be quite a task. Ron Smith in Wimborne Alberta does rifle barrels but can't do handgun. Even liners are a problem as Track of the Wolf won't ship to Canada and I'd have to go through n importer.

Can't or won't?Have you asked him? If it's an antique taking it to a smith is not an issue.Worth a call.

I would check with Bits of Pieces in BC. He brings in lots of barrel blanks and liners. If nothing else he (or anybody with a lathe) could turn down a liner from a barrel blank. Thats what i would do. If you post on the ee there will be somebody with an old barrel that could be turned down as well.

Can you not just replace the barrel? Is .476 the original caliber of that gun cause if it is that is very very rare and you may not want to mess with it... but if the bore size is what you say, it’s still on the big size but that’s a lot closer to a 44 (44-40, etc) bore

Bob Jury can't do it either. The caliber on the trigger guard is " 476 Cal. ". I can bring myself to re-bore so as to give the old gun less stress, but sleeving is bordering sacreligeous( sorry spelling may not be correct haha). re the 44-40 comment- yeah Weird that Colt would have done something like that. The liner suggestion may be the way to go, on a different old Colt barrel and maybe save the original to retain the antiquity of this .476. Hmmm. Thanks for the lead on Bits and Pieces in BC

What about getting a 44 special cylinder and putting those thru it? 429/435 is pretty close and I'd think would work with soft lead?

Just shoot 455 Webley/Eley with hollow base ammo through it.

If you don't reload, Fiocchi makes it and tradex has it in stock, last time I looked.

Gutinater, could I get your contact info?

Yes PM me. If that’s Is indeed a real .476 I strongly suggest you reconsider messing with it. Please look into the rarity of that caliber in SAA production. That being said I don’t know what else has been done to it, there’s a lot of factors besides the caliber when it comes to value. Could it have been an original .476 frame and somebody charged the barrel at some point to shoot another caliber? Does the barrel have the caliber roll marks as it should?

I'm going echo this opinion. Unless you are planned on wearing it out ( as in repetition. ..not around town , lol)...455 is a fun caliber. Preserve the heritage and get a few boxes of 455 made up. It is pretty much designed for Webleys...their bbl / cylinder dimensions are often wonky too.
