I would like to re-chamber my Savage model 99c .308 to a .358 calibre. Would this be feasible or could the barrel be replaced to accomadate the .358 calibre? Any info in regards to this matter would be appreciated!

You are one of many with the same idea. I'm not sure if anyone has actually done it though.

A cheaper option is to have the barrel rebored, but the lightweight barrels don't have enough diameter to support such a large bore. You could also look into 338 Federal which is superior to the 358 in my opinion.

I wanted to do the same thing, but just load the heaviest bullets I can get my hands on into the 308 for bush banging fun. Either way a 308 will kill them good enough

Thanks for the replies!

Appreciate your feedback gentlemen!! I'm was toying with the idea of re-chambering the old girl, one of the best things about owning firearms, is always playing around. I'm starting to think it is not worth the hassle and just keep this beauty original.
Thanks again and all the best!

I purchased a 99 for just for that purpose. A have a few other 99s and they are all older ones with the rotary mag, but for the conversion, I bought a more recent 99c in 308. I just thought that would be a better way to avoid potential feeding issues, as I've read that the rotaries can be pretty finicky about feeding something they weren't originally designed for. I sent the barrel and action to Corlane Sports in Dawson Creek. They sent the barrel off to Ron Smith for the rebore. I also had Corlane do a powder coat of all the metal before sending it back to me. I set the works into a self finished camo laminate stock from gunstocksinc, and topped it with a 2.5-8x VX3 set in Leupold QD rings. It shoots very well, and I am more than pleased with it. Don't be fooled by those who suggest the .338 Federal is a better way to go. The bullet I currently use in my .358 is the Hornady Interlock 250 gr RN, but there are lots of other choices. I really like the TSX bullets, but my thinking is that a 250 gr bullet going at somewhere around 2200 fps need not be an expensive premium to do its job well.
