Re chambering Mausers

I was looking at the P & S firearms site. I saw some Norwegian Mausers(German K98 8mm) rechambered to 30.06. Now can someone explain to me how is this done without completely changing the barrel? 8mm(7.92 to be exact converts to .311 CAL. If I am correct the 30.06 is .30 CAL (7.62mm) . So the barrel would have to be reduced in diameter, not reamed or opened up. Anyone know how this is done? Or am I missing something here?

Thanks

lots of 8mm rifles have been rechambered to " 8mm - 30/06" or 8mm-06 .

and it is nothing more than a 3006 round necked up to 8mm .

could also be a 7mm barrel bored over to 30 cal and rechambered .

or it could just be a shiny new 30 caliber barrel .

no one that i am aware of is able to " shrink " the bore size .

i'm sure it is possible with enough time and money in some skilled hands .

btw 8mm is not .311caliber , it is .32 caliber .

Yup .323 Those Mausers the OP describes would have been re barreled rifles for sure. You missed nothing, the bore diameter can not be shrunk on our planet.

The 8mm/06 was popular for a while mostly because of the scarcity of 8x57 ammo and brass (something against the Kaiser I assume!). Not so anymore. Personally I have a Mauser 98 I had re barreled to 30/06 and everything works superb. No modifications to the action itself at all. Just new barrel, safety, lowered bolt handle and scope mounts in a new stock. Alright......... it is a custom rifle!

My name is AL and I am a Mauser rifle addict.........
