re: From "Guns&Ammo" a new magazine

Guns&Ammo has a new Mil Surp magazine "M1 Magazine", lots of articles on the M1 garand, M1 carbine, M14, M 21 sniper rifle, also some articles of the M14 in use in Iraq, and Afghanistan..check it out,..lots of new photo's too:50cal:

I saw it in the magazine store in the food court at work.
It doesn't look bad at all, a few reprints of older articles, but the vast majority seems to be new stuff.

Garand ammo

I picked up a copy the other day as well, as I recently bought a Garand and might also pick up a Norinco M-14 some time in the near future. I had no idea the Garands were so picky with the ammo. The repeated references to factory ammo destroying the operating rod or bolt is making me nervous. Is that true? Or is the mag blowing it out of proportion?

Don't waste your money. I unfortunately purchased one, before realizing it wasnt all that good. I based my decision thinking it would be of the quality that their Surplus Guns magazine they release periodically. i spotted an article for scope mounts thinking it would be in-depth and wasnt even a half decent glance of the subject matter. This magazine is only good for people who know nothing about Garand's, Carbines and M-14s and are looking for a starting point. Even then, save your money and spend a half hour on the web, you will get more for your efforts.

X-westie you owe me 10 bucks and change!:D

If you want to use factory ammo, and not worry about beating up the operating rod on your M1.. you should look into the McCann gas plughttp://www.mccannindustries.com

Look for the adjustable gas plug under Accessories in the McCann website

McCann gas plug

Ditto for X Westie's comment!

I bought a McCann plug last year for my M1 and it is great. Using the largest aperture Allen screw and thus bleeding off the greatest amount of gas of the 5 screws supplied, my Danish M1 cycles perfectly and recoil is identical to that felt when shooting regulation M2 ball ammo with the original gas plug. This allows the non-reloading shooter to use any regular modern 150-grain hunting .30-'06 ammo without damage to the op rod. The McCann plug is easy to order from Ellwood Epps in Orillia, and shipped to Edmonton with no problems.

Lots of old M1 shooters say they haven't had a problem with modern hunting ammo, but Garand parts are hard to find in Canada and I would rather be safe than sorry. With the McCann plug installed as above, the action on my rifle will not cycle with regular M2 ball ammo. This is good enough proof for me that the modern hunting ammo is significantly different and hotter that the ammo for which the rifle was originally designed. HTH!
