No, not joking, and i have already tried that,..and if using a 30-06 rd was the most accurate way of measuring muzzle wear, then there would be no need for gauges .
These are a tapered plug gauge which has lines indicating diameters from .300 thru .303. They are very useful for checking muzzle wear. Best bet is to try ebay and look for a vendor who will export(this is a tool, not a gun part).
A .30-06 ball rd or a 150gr bullet with a cannelure can be used as a quick and dirty muzzle wear gauge to get an idea of the extent of muzzle wear.Basically if the bullet can be inserted into the muzzle as far as the cannelure this indicates excessive wear. Brownells used to sell a throat erosion gauge which was adaptable to both .30-06 and 7.62 in either a Garand or M14 type.
Stoneaxe Engineering gauges made by Steve Matthews measure the TE and the MW on Garands. I got one a few years ago, and it works great. Evidently Steve has moved on to other pursuits and Stoneaxe Engineering is no more. However, as of a year ago, he still had some for sale. His contact info is:

Send him a SASE and tell him what you want. BTW, I think I paid about $55 (US) for the gauge.
