re: Korean war armorer memoirs

Tha Bren gun in the pic had me confused for a bit until I realised it was a chinese 8mm version.

When I first read John's post, I thought "Inglis." Many thousands of these 8mm (8x57 Mauser calibre) Bren guns were made by the Canadian John Inglis Company, along with the Browning Hi-Power pistol during WWII for the Chinese.

I've had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Faris a few times. A very interesting and well-informed gentleman. I hope he is still with us and I'm very glad he has written something like this. Should be fascinating.

A very good account by someone who was there. It's interesting how a big, fat logistics system can sometimes fail to deliver the most vital things, like small arms cleaning supplies and lubes, to the troops at the sharp end. The US Army/Marines experienced the same shortages in the early part of the Pacific war where the rifle cleaning kits carried by the Japanese were eagerly sought after.

I can recall a couple of episodes back in the FN days where the supply system was tapped out on cleaning patches. This caused us to buy out the Calgary gun shops so the troops wouldn't need to cut up their shirttails to keep their rifles clean. In the early '70s we found that the system had ran dry of .50 cal barrels due to the demands of the Vietnam war. I was in 1 Bde HQ in Calgary at the time, and being a keen "gunnut" found them for sale in my Numrich catalog. After confirming that they were indeed MILSPEC barrels, we bought a bunch to keep the guns ticking.

Canadian troops in the Korean war where using Inglis HP 9mm pistols, Inglis Bren .303 's & Long Branch Sten smg,..the Chinese on the other hill could have been using Inglis HP,Bren 7.92mm, and the Sten ,also i believe that we shipped our Long Branch No.4 to the Nationalist Chinese to aid them in their war against Japan, these rifles were then captured by the Communists....our guys were more than slightly pi**ed off..!
