Hi, I have been re-loading 30.06 for target practice, but am interested in making some rounds for hunting larger game such as Elk and Moose.

Does anyone have good experience with home made vs. factory ammo ?

What specific Powder and Projectiles did you use ?

For large game hunting rounds I load 180 gr Hornady SST's with IMR 4064. Through my Remington 700, 24" barrel, 1:10 twist I shoot sub MOA at 100 meters all day long.

have used in several 30 06 and all shot well. 180 hornady or sierra game king, 57 grn imr 4350 and magnum primer i prefer federal. start at 54 grns and work up.

Barnes 165 gr TSX with IMR 4350 or 4831 has taken alot of Moose and Elk for me.
IM0 a well constructed 165 gr is a perfect all around bullet in the 06

I have killed one bull Elk and cow Elk using 150gn Hdy SST at 2960fps. Bull was shot from behind at about 150m hit and cow elk broad side at less than 100m. Both dropped dead within 10 - 20meters.
Last year I killed a cow moose using a 150gn TTSX at 3000fps. First shot hit the stomach and a second shot was required as the animal was still moving.

I don't think you need a heavy bullet to kill an Elk or Moose. Modern bullets are well constructed and will get the job done if used within the proper range. As always shot placement is king... bullet weight is Queen

Good quality 165gr will take pretty much anything you hit properly, I've used them on a couple of moose and many deer, and a couple of jack rabbits. very versatile

51gr IMR 4895/150gr TTSX/win brass /fed mag primer.........2950fps several moose with 40" penetration out of a T-3

I have shot more moose than I deserve to. The vast majority have fallen to Nosler Partitions.
In the 30-06, I prefer the 165 or 180 grain Partitions. A 150 TTXS will definitely get the job
done as well. Moose are not difficult to put on the ground. Elk are tougher, IMHO. Particularly
a big bull steamed up for the rut.

When I specifically am headed out after a Bull Elk, I have stoked my '06 with the 200 Partition.
In a 24" barrel, 2700 fps is available, and that is a thumper of a load with trajectory not far off
the 180 @ 2800. If you prefer the Accubond, they will work equally well. Regards, Dave.

What powder have you found works well with the 200’s? I have always wanted to try a big pill in my trusty old .30-06.

A good 180 grain bullet with a book load of Reloader 22. I have had no reason to try anything else. To those that say elk are easy to bring down I beg to differ. My experience tells me they are very tough and if not hit well will likely not be found. Anyone that says different has not hunted elk much.
