I know it's a straight walled cartridge, so it would appear that it's not necessary, but it is a lot of brass going through the FL sizer so just thought I'd check with anyone else who reloads it if they lube the case up before sizing it or not.

Yes lube the case unless you have a carbide sizer die! Otherwise it will get stuck!

The 45-70 is not a straight walled case, it's tapered. It's .480" OD at the neck and .505" OD just above the rim. That's why conventional carbide sizing dies don't exist for it.

No carbide = use lube

I agree with LUTNIT not a straight case must be lubed have been loading 45/70 for a number of years lube is a must good luck

I am still real old school about lubing cases. Carbide dies or not I still lube the case inside the necks and outside the case on everything I load. I have been chastised for this by lots of people but I've never had any issues with it. I also wash my handloads in warm soapy water to remove the lube on the outside of the cases. Yeah, I know its anal but it works for me.

Ditto for me except I just use paper towel sprayed with Windex to wipe the cases afterward.

There's little need to resize those cases for the most part. I have a RCBS die that I screwed the primer removing pin all the way down, and only run the cases into the die far enough to remove the primer. Still cycles in my lever just fine. I use high pressure loads and paper patches. Just got a universal decapping die. Think I'll see how many shots will cycle reliably in one case...
