Been trying to find a decent load for my Armalite AR-10 in 7.62/308. Tried both Hornady 150g FMJ and 168g A-max bullets and average groupings for both were over four inches at 100 yards some pushing the six inch group. Im not expecting the rifle to be a tac driver out of the box but it should be able to make close to MOA with re-loads. I Was thinking that I was pulling a little, and it was maybe me being a bad shot I tried some South African ball and go a 1.5-2 inch group which from what I have read is standard. So, I am comfortable that it is not me or the rifle.

Was a light wind, but not enough to through off a .308 at 100 yards as much as I was getting. And like mentioned while I was pulling slightly it was not enough to open up the groups that much, as I found out with the SA ball.

Loads were using Military brass, the 168 loads were in front of IMR 4895, starting at 36.5g and topping out at 41g at .5 grain intervals. CCI primers. Cant remember the 150 loads but they were in front of IMR 4064 and were between 38 and 42 grains if I remember with once again half grain increases.

Any Advice?

Huh, that's quite the difference in group size. Try some other bullets or powder. Are you crimping? Were the groups all over the place, or was there a trend, like mostly vertical or horizontal?

All over the place. Smallest group was about maybe 2.5 inches with the 168's. I might load up another batch of both and try again tomorrow. Try a better rest set up and see if that improves. For economy I might try 1 grain increments, take the best group and go up and down by .5 grain this time.

One thing I'm wondering, is I'm using a primer pocket uni-former on a drill to ream out the crimp on the military brass. Obviously I wont be able to hold it dead straight so would a slightly crooked pocket seriously effect accuracy?

Both the bullets you are shooting are boat tail, try switching to a flat base bullet. This will test three things, a over sized bore and the muzzle and flash suppressor causing the bullet to yaw.

NOTE: When I have a problem like yours I use 30-30 bullets due to their softer core, these bullets will fill the bore when kicked in the seat of the pants when fired.

For either bullets, the powder charges you have listed as still very mild. You may find better results by adding more powder.

Chrony the surplus vs your handlods. Odds are the surplus is going alot faster then your handloads

The powder choices will work as will the bullets.

Keep working up slowly and I am sure things will get better

Twist on the barrel is a 1:11.25 if that helps the info.

Ill try some hotter loads and see what happens as well.

Your initial loads were below the recommended starting loads (41.0 gns start load - 44.0 gns max. load per the Hodgdon reloading site). Also try a different powder. Some of my rifles like 4895, some do not.
