I have a older 782 in great shape but I was hoping to change barrels to turn it into a 17 is that possible or is it easier to buy a 17

Easier to buy a new 17 IMHO....

Unless you already have a 17 barrel profiled to fit the 782 action, a reamer and gauges, and can do the switch yourself, it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one. But don't let this stop you if you wanted to try it. Sometimes the ones you do yourself mean the most to you.
