Fun stuff. I'm with you on budget/fun long distance shooting. It's so much more fun when it's a $300 gun instead of a $3000 rig.

My fav rifle is my BRNO mauser action that has a heavy bull barrel. I shoot T/R with it and it's a blast shooting with peep sights. I only have 600m to use, but it's still a blast.

Indeed it comes as a surprise to some you don't need anything special to shoot long range and hit targets. :) That's why most WWII era (and even a good ways after) sniper rifles were just rack grade rifles that shot a bit better than average, with some tuning and an optic. No heavy barrels, tight chambers, etc. The deadliest sniper of all time with 505 confirmed kills, a diminutive Finn named Simo Hayha, used iron sights all but exclusively.

Very true, here is a 1967 interview with Matthäus Hetzenauer (German sniper WW2) who had 345 kills. He used his 98K with 6X optic to 1000 meters on the eastern front. I got snickered at the other day because I "only" have a 12X on my rifle
