Question: what's the closest "safe" distance for shooting reactive steel (poppers) with OO Buck? Or is something like #5 lead a better idea?

I must agree. #4 and up. This is what is used in The Barrie Action shotgun Matches and the old Peel Action Shotgun matches. It is less likely to come back at you.

Now don't be getting any bloody ideas about putting steel out at 40 meters at the next EESA 3 Gun :runaway:

That was about the range of his big slug stage on paper, wasn't it? At least with steel, you get a "clang" :)

Good point...:D

Still...we shouldn't be giving him any ideas...he comes up with enough on his own

Shooting disciplines, such as Cowboy action shooting specify the largest shot you can use is #4 lead shot. Most competitors use #7 1/2 & 8 shot, and you can still get splashback with them at 10-15 meters depending on the positioning of the target and depending whether they are stationary or not.
