Tested target today and red back panel easily seen at 600 when hit with .308. I get a lot of questions on how I build some of my targets so here are detailed photos.

Ok, honesty is the best policy. This is my version of a target that is available on the internet, however, I need to make various sizes to practice for FTR so cost would be prohibitive and I weld for a hobby. The bearings are from Princess auto, the polycarbonate sheeting is from Rona. Plate is AR400 steel. I should have squared up the panels for the photo shoot but rifle shooting was the priority.

This is the best video I captured, unfortunately only at 380 yards. You could see the red panel waving at 600 without binoculars but the video is not clear. This is a gravel pit in the middle of nowhere Manitoba, I don't know why the picnic table was there. The closer target is for 100 yard .22 and the shooting angle was well away from any damage to the table.

Target size

Not a bad guess. Yes it is 8". It was one of the AR plates I had laying around the shop. Stuff for FTR will be different size. Just had to try it before I got too carried away.

Is that at the lafarge pit by richer? That the only pit I can think of around Winnipeg that features a picnic table haha. Nice tragets

That is an awesome design. Works like a charm.

Just need to make a second smaller plate to hang in front of that one in the middle to know if you hit center or off to the sides. Rig up 2 sets of swinging thingers. If thats possible.

Very nice set up.

If I may make a suggestion, put this in front of that cardboard target that is to the right in the top pic.

If you miss with that much snow, you will not likely see where the bullet hit and adjusting for misses is the info I want.

Good luck with your smaller targets.

Jerry

The large gong is our sighter. With fresh paint you can see hit location with a spotting scope at 385.

You are right about the small targets. It took a little luck to find them when they went flying in that snow. All part of the fun. We never did find the golf ball. Maybe in spring.

At 600 we were getting just enough snow kicking up to get on target. Took a couple of shots to get on, then it was just a matter of waiting for the target to settle down for the next shot. Just a light steady breeze from the left.

After we set up at 600 we only returned once to retrieve targets. You are correct, if we would have had trouble we had extra sheets of cardboard to place behind target. With those 50 power Sightrons you sold us we can spot for each other no problem.

Jerry, you probably know the shooter in the colorful jacket. Take a look at the other post "A day at the range Manitoba Style". You met him at the Homestead range last summer.

Yes, He is a very good shooter indeed. Handled the gail we shot in and got on the podium.

You are keeping very good company.

Hope to see you guys at Homestead and Nokomis next year. My 223 is working quite well at 500m. Waiting for spring to get more time at 1000yds so I can keep up with better shooters.

Glad those Sightron 50's are working well for you. I love mine.

Jerry

Three Sightron 50s out that day. Had my .223 with 90 bergers. Swinging target moved no problem with the Bergers.

One of the other shooters used 55s on the swinging target and the red appeared no problem..
