Well I've seen lots of people make or buy steel reactive targets and decided, hell, why not make my own?
I happened to find some scrap steel outside work one day and brought it home and made my first one (the one on the right)

My buddies and I decided to take a few shots at it with our .223/.308s to see if they'd make their way though the 3/8ths soft steel, alas they did not and it's all dinged up :(
So I had some time to kill today and decided to make another one out of some 1/4" diamond plate and other scrap steel that we had laying around.

She's a lot of fun to shoot!

Thanks! Since I didn't have time to set up the whole range I was just shooting at the close berm, so 20 and 40 yards off hand.
It was really hard to see from way back against the back stop which made it more fun when I did actually hit it! :p

Good looking targets! I ended up buying a reactive target from Canadian Tire, but I'm planning on making some small ones to place around it. I think your design would be perfect with the scrap metal we have here on the farm.

Whats the story with the lever-action? Looks like it has a bit of history to it.

Thanks! I was originally planning on making it a knock-down style target, but decided that a swinging target would be less work (less walking down-range to reset!).

That Marlin Mod. 39 has been in the family a long time. I don't know if it's been around since new, but we've had it for at least 50 years. It's serial number range is in the 4### area, and from what I remember it's about 120 years old.
Excellent rifle. She's incredibly accurate and a ton of fun to shoot!

looks good.

as far as your target thats all dinged up. fill the holes with weld, grind it flush and your good to go again. (im assuming you have acess to a welder)

Try road marking paint spray bombs. They will last a whole hell of a lot long before they fade off and will make you kool gong's easier to hit for ya.
I just wish that shipping wasn't soo god damm expensive cuz I would have just made you an offer on that mini rocker you made ;)

Great targets~looks like fun! Having made a pile of my own, you should hit the steel with white paint before the florescent orange~It'll REALLY stand-out once you do.

Cheers,
Rob

I keep a black spray paint can in the car for when I hit the range with my steel targets. I find that the orange was good... but it needed a white base coat first like ".22LRGUY" said.

The black stands out almost as good as there really isn't much in nature that's pure black. (During the day, that is) :p

Welcome to the world of blackpowder trail walks. We do this all the time. Something very satisfying about that ringing sound of lead on steel. Better than holes in paper any day.

That 39 is georgeous! And I like what you did with that small target. These are a couple spinners I made a couple years ago that have held up very well. They are 1/4" plates, the bigger ones are 4"x3", and the smaller ones are roughly 3"x2" and they spin pretty good even out past 100 m. They fit right into a piece of square bar thats fixed to the silhouette stands, but i also made a set of bases for using them out in the bush.
My next project is to make a re-setting target for rimfire and a spinning gong for centerfire.

Hello and good day.

Some great home built targets posted here, nice job people...I wish I had the time.

Here's one I picked up a my local shop...Champion .22 Dueling Target Tree.

Had it out on the weekend and everyone loved it...especially the competitive types.

I just like shooting it...my buddies are always challenging me to a duel...luckly everyone brought their GSG 1911...what a faceoff!

And the upset of the day...my Browning BL-22 vs. Spikes AR-22 with reddot.

Love my BL-22.

A "blackpowder trail walk" is as follows: a path is set up through the woods. Has you go down the trail you will come upon a shooting station where you get to shoot at a target hanging somewhere amongst the trees. Usually it's a metallic silhouette of some animal. It could also be a straw, piece of string, lump of coal, or the more challenging "card cut" where you have to cut a playing card in half; all you can see is a thin white line. Yes I've done it several times. For every target you hit you get one point. Person with the most points wins. "blanket prizes" are part of your entrance fee and order of choosing is by points. Lots of fun and a great social event. Oh, you can only shoot patched round balls on the trail walk.
