I have been researching for quite a bit now for a new varmint rifle in .223. I have so far narrowed it down to three models:
-CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar
-Tikka T3 Varmint
-Savage 12FV

I was also looking at the remington's but their twist rates are all 1:12 and that limits me to a 55 gr, while the others are 1:8 and 1:9, so I can go up to 77 gr which is better. Now I have recently read some negative revues on one of them regarding customer support and factory quality control before shipping that was not good and that worries me. I won't say which one. If you all could give your experiences Pro & Cons I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Andre

I have had the savage and remington and used the tikka. I like how slick the Tikka was and how well it fits right from the factory without having to do anything to it. As has been said many times before on this board, the Remington can be customized with a huge array of aftermarket stocks and the manufacturers are slowly coming on board with savage stocks. If you don't like the Tikka stock you are SOL.

You can get a fast twist barrel on the Rem 700P.

To do it again I would go with the Tikka or Rem as I like these two the most.

You've made great choices. I have rifles by all 3 makers, all...bar none are awesome shooters. I have had experience with customer support only with Savage. They are top notch, I broke a part after my warranty was over by just a few days. The lady at Savage didn't even ask me when I bought my gun, my new part arrived in the mail no questions asked. Tough choice :)

Inukshuk don't give up on Remington there a fine gun I got a Rem 700 in .223 with 26" barrel 1/9 twist there is one left at http://www.ellwoodepps.com/new_firearms_remington.asp
gun # NG 10898
but you could go one better and buy there New for 2007 XCR Tactical .223 1/9 twist B&C Stock Green 26" stainless barrel fully coated in TriNyte PVD coating,my friend just order one will be out end of May Epps has them coming in Go to http://www.remington.com/ and order a new Cataloge there free go to page 20 this is some gun pillar bedded, new trigger,
You could bend barrel around a rock and still get $500 just for the action don't see any others bring that kind of dollars used
Good Luck

I'd take the model 10 over the 12FV if I went with the Savage. I'd pass the Tikka, because I personally find it offensive to the eye in the extreme. I haven't tried CZ, though it's on my to do list

Hi,

I also have a rifle by all 3 makers and if you want the most accurate rifle out of the box can't go wrong with the Tikka varmint.

If you prefer a more classic mauser type action and a durable long term rifle (no plastic) go with the CZ.

The only problems with the CZ527 is the mag setup and bolt clearance. I only hope to buy a CZ550 American in 6.5x55 someday.

The Savage is not a bad choice and can be very accurate. The main problem with the FV is the stock. It flexes a lot and accuracy suffers. Spend a little more and buy a BVSS or a good aftermarket stock. Even with a new stock, you will be well under the price of the Tikka.

Thanks everybody for your input. Since this thread began I checked out a few more, but only a couple extra had the specks I'm looking for which is mainly a 1:8-1:9 twist in the .223
-Reminton 700™ XCR Tactical
-Sako 85 Varmint
-Sako 75 Varmint

But these babies are quite a bit more expensive "Super nice though".
Money money money. I know the general rule is you get what you pay for. I already paid good for a custom, but really can't afford one of the higher end ones sadly. Each one has it's pros and cons. Think I'll wait till I go down this summer and try to go to as many gun shops as I can for some checking. To bad it's not possible though to have access to all these models :(
In the meantime more input please.

I have the Savage 12FV. Pretty hard to beat the value/performance you gt from that rifle. It is super accurate and handles all the ammo I feed it very well.

Copy what Troutseeker said. The 9 twist is fast enough for 75gr AMax in mine, and it's decent accuracy with bulk 223 makes it a good all 'rounder.

Good idea, check to see what is out there and the price and fit for you!

Scott

Notice I mentioned the last three sadly out of my price range. :(

I wouldnt say that, you may find a used one in the EE forum for the same price you'd pay for a new Tikka Varmint or CZ. Try posting a wanted add, worst thing will happen is you don't find one.
Ive seen Sako 75 varmint with low round counts sell anywhere from $1050 -$1200 shipped thats only about $150 more then you'd pay for a T3 Varmint at $989 plus tax and shipping. Keep your eyes open and be patient and you'll get a good deal.

Cheers!!

GOOD IDEA

But I can't imagine why someone would want to sell something like that, but hey, that's fine with me.

You can get the Rem 700 Police with a 1-9" if you like flat black. I have that one and love it. Use to have a Savage with a 1-9" and it was fine too, but didn't like the trigger. Had a Win 70 with a 1-9" and actually liked it a lot and wore that barrel out from match shooting. I also have a Tikka T3 Varmint, but not in .223. Fine production rifle, but that one won't get customized.

Bottom line, I do a lot of shooting and the Rem 700's are best for aftermarket and customizing. You will see a lot more of them and their clones in the sniper matches with new barrels installed.

I have 1- 12FV and 2- rem. 700P. My advice to you would be buy a rem. 700P , by the time you finish pissing around with the stock(s) you will have spent the same for a 700P in the box
