Hi I traded a guy locally my SKS + some dollars for his Universal M1 Carbine in .30 Carbine. I kind of think he got the better rifle but I wanted the M1 for the cool factor anyway.

Problem is, it came with a cheesy plastic mag that only seems to hold 4 rounds and it binds and jams all the time. Are there any pinned mags 5/15 or 5/30 being sold in Canada?

Thanks!

Trade Ex Canada and SFRC The Ammo Source, also site sponsors, both carry metal KCI 30 round M1 Carbine magazines pinned to five rounds. SFRC also carries KCI fifteen round magazines, but they are currently out of stock.

And he definitely got the better side of the deal.

As mentioned. There is quite a few sources for M1 Carbine mags.
You might wish to post a WTB ad on the EE, for mags.
Oh btw, M1 Carbines are not a Main Battle Rife. They are a Carbine.

No offence, but if you gave an SKS and cash for a Universal, you got robbed. Universals are nothing like a real M1 Carbine. No issue parts other than sights and mags will work. The poorly made stamped op handles tend to break. Only place for Universal parts I've seen is Gunparts, Stateside. Carbines are ITAR controlled for some daft reason too. Means no parts from the States without the State Dept. permit. If the barrel is as issued, your Carbine is restricted. Because of that, mags are around, but are pricey(Marstar wants $27 for a pinned 15 rounder. Out of stock of course.) and not exactly common.
However, no Universal ever came with a plastic mag.

Unfortunately, sunray is on the ball. Universals are a hated breed.

But on topic,
KCI magazines are way nicer than I expected. I'd buy them again for sure.

Got pictures of the plastic magazine? Never heard of such a thing.

My Inland came with a small plastic mag, probably was 5 rounds. Someone had removed the insides and glued the follower in place , sort of a bad home made attempt at a sled. Never figured out if it was functional in any way, I think I thew it out.

GI M1 carbine mags seem to have all dried up in recent years. Even in the US, WW2 , Korean and Vietnam era mags are getting pricey. The Auto ordnance ones don't have that parkerized/blued finish that they should have.....

I bought one plastic magazine, it takes only 4 rounds and they seem to bind. I'm not using it anymore. I bought some USG 5 round magazines from Brownell in the States and they work the best on my Auto-Ordinance M-1 carbine. The carbine was designed as a compromise between the Colt 1911 and the M-1Garand. For what it was built for it works great. It's a fun gun to shoot, it's light, it does not kick and if you feed it with Tula ammo, it's cheap to feed. I like mine a lot.

However, no Universal ever came with a plastic mag.
That turns out to be inaccurate. The four round (supposedly five but I could never get a fifth round in it) plastic mag came as standard with the Universal M1. It's even shown inserted in the picture on the original box.
