I searched for this but all the dirty ammo threads i found refered to the powder or primers so...

I have this 7.62x25 ammo, steel case with lacquer coating. It came in 40rnd white boxes in a green crate but there was no seal like im used to, just cardboard boxes in a wood crate. Some are nice and shiny smooth while others are dirty. I was shooting my tt33 for the first time, put about 180 rounds through it and broke the extractor. While i was shooting it i had 4 failure to ejects and unfortunately didnt realize what was happening until it broke. The casing would get jammed in there and i would have to yank back on the slide really hard to get it to pull the casing out, on the fourth one it broke the extractor and i had to hammer the casing out. I found that some of the rounds did not slide into the chamber nice. Im thinking its because they are dirty or the lacquer finish is bad...or maybe the casing are poorly sized?

Iv fixed the extractor but this leaves me with checking every single round for sizing, i am considering getting a case tumbler and running the live rounds through it...thing thats a bad idea? I was concerned that the powder flakes might break up into smaller pieces causing a faster burn and higher pressures. Or am i stuck sorting through all these/cleaning them by hand? Anyone else run into this?

I've boughten some 7.62x39 for my sks that didn't come tin sealed and the casings were corroded/rusted.. I got a new case free of charge and got to keep the corroded ones as well.. I shot them and they fire, however extraction is sometimes an issue

hmm maybe i will contact the company i bought them from...on closer inspection i think they may be corroded/rusted...haha there not going to like me much since i returned the tt33 i bought as well for the broken extractor and now im complaining about the ammo.

Did you oil the hell out of the TT33?

I only ever had one stoppage with the old whore in well over 1000 rnds and it was a stuck casing in the chamber failure to extract.

I was foolishly running it bone dry for many hundreds of rounds up to that point.

Stripped the gun, oiled the casing, let it sit, put the cleaning rod down the barrel and smacked her on the ground. Popped out the casing.

A whole bunch of oil later and she is still running like a Swiss...er.....Soviet watch? lol

Have you had any issues since you replaced the extractor Comrade?

These things are pretty hardcore little machines. As long as you oil them and keep an eye on the parts that handle most of the stress of firing, you can keep them running easily with next to no maintenance or cleaning, very little is required.

Mine have eaten some really dirty cases without a problem.
But like Mr Bickle I oil mine heavily...like, you stand beside me you'd better be wearing older clothes 'cause you are going to be speckled with oil. My glasses get oily as all get out. My Norc has digested thousands of rounds of all sort. Bushing failures til I put in a FSU TT-33 bushing from Tradex, other than that it's a tank.

hmm, well maybe i just had bad luck with that one. I fully stripped it and oiled it, not to the point it was dripping off but on all the moving parts. However i only lightly coat the bore to prevent rust during storage...are you saying you heavily oil the chamber/bore before you going shooting? Cant excessive oil in the bore cause over pressure?

Ill see how this one works, its an entirely different pistol since they wanted me to send the entire thing back. Im actually a bit disappointed because the one i had before was all numbers matching, even the mag and the bore looked brand new. This one is noticeably worn and the numbers dont match anymore but i bought it to shoot not collect so i guess i shoudnt care. Hopefully its as accurate at the first one i had because i was quite impressed.

I got a similar crate to yours in the fall and the cases are all dusty except I never get a failure to feed/extract etc. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 hammer strikes to ignite the primer though.

Where did you get the surplus ammo from? I bought some from a lower mainland store once and they were all rusted. Just wondering if its from the same place?

No i ordered it from one of the bigger online sponsors that deals with surplus stuff quite a bit...its not really their fault so im probably not going to post which one.

I do oil the chamber of mine as well.

Always have since the last and only real issue I've had with her.

It hasn't caused any problems in hundreds of rounds with oil in the chamber lol

I wouldn't on any of my other firearms but it's a Tokarev ;)

If you have something like the Lee ZipTrim or other holder that you can spin the ammo with, you can always give the rounds a quick polish with a scotchbrite pad on the outside. I have gone through two crates of Tok ammo now and have not had the problem you have experienced, but I do have rounds with hard primers that occasionally need a second strike to set off... Bonus having a pistol you can just re-#### and fire when it fails to go off the first time! :)
Enjoy your MilSurp, it sure is cheap fun!

So just to update, i have found that the problem with the ammo isnt that its dirty, 95% of the ammo is fine but there are a few random rounds that are oversided or out of round. They jam with about 1/8" - 1/4" still sticking out the the chamber. If you try to push them at all you need a screw driver to pry them out. This is for sure what broke the extractor, i guess ill have to check every single round. I did 480 of them today and 25 of them were no good...few thousand more to go...
