I'm in the process of building a PR rig. Now the only thing I'm trying to school myself on is Reamers. Should I buy one or should I not bother and let the gunsmith take care of it.? Thoughts would be appreciated .
 
Talk to the gunsmith who is going to be doing the machining. He might have the exact one you want used. Or, do you want to own the reamer?
 
For competition rifles you might want to use a match reamer throated for the bullet you will use . As mentioned above if you choose the a gunsmith who makes rifles for your discipline he might have the exact reamer you need.
 
I would be more inclined to go with Manson. Decide what you want, then phone him and discuss it with him. Do you have your barrel yet? You want best match of the pilot to the bore.
It is one thing to cut a generic chamber in a hunting rifle barrel, quite another to chamber a barrel for a serious precision rifle.
 
I too would go with Manson as I had difficulty with my last reamer from PT&G and they charged me to correct it ( it only cut on 2 flutes). Gary Eakins aka thereamerguy@yahoo.ca distributes Manson reamers I believe and is easy to deal with.
 
I have had chatter problems with the larger sizes of Manson reamers. I only buy reamers from JGS. They cost more and the wait is longer but I have never had a bad one from them and they always cut well. PTG was a disaster for me, no where near the print. Let the GS buy from who he likes, he probably has more experience with this than you have. He may want oil grooves etc. which is more complex on the Manson reamers than JGS. On JGS the pilot shank is grooved but on the Manson it is solid so oil passages need to be ground in.

Thanks Ian , I'm going with JGS.
 
I try to avoid ptg reamers if I can, I have had issues with their reamers, and their service. Most of my reamers are manson, and I have not had an issue with his reamers or service. I only have one jgs reamer so it's not much of a opinion, but the reamer and service seemed good aswell.
