This sporterized Ross rifle currenly sports a rear buckhorn elevator sight mounted on the barrel. What I believe is, remains the rear base for the original Cooey manufactured rear sight. I don't like the buckhorn rear sight and would like to go with a receiver mounted peep again but not necessarily the original Cooey sight, at the same time like to increase the sight radius.

Question being....was anything aftermarket made to be readily fit the original rear base? If possible I'd like to re-use the original base and not modify the receiver in any way, or are my options only to go with the original Cooey peep again?

I have a sported M-10 that has a customized rear peep sight. It is a very simple arrgt, similar to a Lee Enfield battle sight with only one blade. It utilizes the original spring attachment to allow for folding. It is not adjustable. I suspect it was made up back in the fifties when these rifles were released. If I was in your shoes I'd seek out the OEM parts or put a flat based, adjustable Williams peep sight on it. Heck, if you dont want to modify the receiver, just use a bit of epoxy to secure the sight on the flat part of the receiver bridge.

I guess I'm lucky.

I was given a crudely home-shop sporterized Ross M-10 in 1967 when I was 13 and still have it.

It has the original Ross rear sight.

I learn something every day. The battle sight will fit and not knowing what a # 10 Cooley is, any sight the has a pin size the same as the Ross boss and a flat on the bottom that holds the sight vertical against an appropriate spring will do.
You can lash up an interim piece and keep an eye out for a battle sight. Patience! (God give me some!)

Might be just as easy to put some Weaver bases and a nice low power scope on that bad boy... You could probably still use the buckhorn sights with the scope removed, for those rainy days.

No point wasting an original back-sight on it as the markings won't correspond to where it will shoot with the shortened barrel: the line of sight has changed too much.

I had the same problem. Got a Weaver #45 base. radius almost matches the contour of the receiver, just a few rubs on the outside edges with a half round file and finish with emery cloth wrapped around a dowel. Number 48 Weaver on rear, it has a radius base as well but just mount the front base and using a straight edge file the rear base down on the bottom until both bases are exactly the same elevation. Like yours mine has been dicked around so no collector value but still a decent hunting rifle. My solution anyway, I'm sure there are others.
