Hi,
i am new to the whole black rifle thing and have recently purchased a norinco 14.5 upper for a rifle i am building.

My question is about rail mounted flip up sights.
I am going to put a red dot on this rifle but would like a flip up rear that would be the right height for the stock front sight. Are they all made to the same height?? I have been looking at alot of adds and see some i like but am not sure if they are the correct height to line up with the factory front or must be matched with the rail mounted front from the same manufactuer.

Any help would be apprecatied.
I am building the gun for local three gun matches which may see shots out to 100 yards. I would prefer the dot for close up but am happy with the irons for the farther stuff.

PS Jamie I hope to have this ready for the fall match

Using irons for far stuff and a red dot for cqb doesn't make much sense... Well within the same round, your best best would be a variable scope like a 1-4x scope, or a red dot/hws with a flip to side 3x magnifier.

I think a lot of the BUIS I've seen fit under the optics no issue. Just look for something that's made to be mounted on the same plane.... Which is all of them I think, I think Magpul, Troy, or Midwest comes to mind...

MOST ar15 rear flip up style sights are going to be the same height (with the exception of some for the HK416 height or SIG 516 guns).

The ones for those oddballs SHOULD be clearly marked; ALA Troy HK416 Folding rear sight Versus the regular Troy, or Midwest Industries ones should be just "Troy/M.I. AR15 folding rear sight" etc...

A red-dot is a great CQB sight, but if you consider an Aimpoint M4 has a 2moa dot, I believe the front post of an AR15 is actually 11moa, so a red-dot is definitely capable of accuracy as well as speed.

As Justinchow said, a 3x magnifier allows extra range with a red-dot, or a variable power scope like a 1-4 power gives you almost the same speed and 2-eye open features of a red-dot but the zoom to 4 power all in 1 package.

Of course using just a red-dot for 4-500 yard shooting is definitely possible as people do iron shooting to 500 yards all the time, but you can get more accuracy with the magnifier or a 1-4 power scope!

thanks all
i know a scope would be better for far shooting but i have an astigmatism problem in my eye and a red dot gets a little too fuzzy past 50 yeards to be accurate. For some reason the front sight in focus - target blurry still works ok for me

I would definitely look into the 1-4 power sights then, you can get some nice QR style mounts so you can use Iron sights in an emergency, but for people with an astigmatism, the optical sight MAY allow better focus. The Vortex Viper PST 1-4 is a nice scope in the same price range as an Aimpoint but obviously you get 1-4 ability.

I have heard of people using the Leupold Prismatic rifle sight (a 1x prism-based sight) with great success with an astigmatism, which is why I am leaning towards a 1-4 power, your eye doesn't have to focus on multiple optical planes, just 1.

OR as another option, I have heard of people using sights like the Trijicon Reflex (or Trijicon tri-power for an Aimpoint look alike) or Leupold delta point with the triangular retical, as you use the tip of the triangle for range work and the big triangle body for closer in, and the sharp edges with the bigger aiming point seem to work better.

Just some food for thought :)

I'm pretty sure based off some reviews I've read along the way that there are sight posts of different height. I know I've seen some "low profile" ones on internet listings and they seemed to be shorter than regular sights, but I've never seen them in person so I can't verify any actual height differences.

It wouldn't surprise me much if mismatched sights give atypical results.
Currently I've got a Magpul MBUS front sight and a UTG version 6 carry handle. Not the best combo I've ever heard of, and looks kind of strange, but it's all I've got for now. However, they both seem to be at the same height, but I haven't shot with them yet so I'm not sure how well they pair.

I think you might be safe as long as one isn't some kind of "low profile" model and the other is normal.

You're right! That IS a little strange looking... I think with the DD, I'd have gotten the 1.5 Fixed sight for the rear and a fixed rail mounted front... sweet gun though! All you people with your DDs make me jealous... might just have to sell mine just for a DD
