Hi Guys,

I have a No. 1 mkIII* that I am trying to remove the rear sight from to install a Mojo Micro Click sight.

Instructions with the microclick say that I should just punch out the pin holding the rear sight in place.

Easier said than done.

I have so far bent two punches trying to remove the pin. Oiling it doesn't seem to help. I am trying to punch it out from the left to the right - which seems like it ought to be the correct direction

Any helpful tips?

I would say the leaf, not the base.

What type is the sight? Is it a split pin (WWII $ post WWII) of the machined pin and washer with small pin?

yes, trying to remove the leaf, not the base.

Sight is the non-windage adjustable open sight.

Not sure if the pin holding the leaf in place is entirely solid or not. There is certainly a depression in the center of the pin - perhaps it is hollow all the way through?

The left 'end' of the pin appears flattened - therefore I am trying to punch it out from the right side.

Thanks for the help - and rest assured I am only replacing the leaf - the rifle will not be bubba'd

There are two different ways the leaf is held in place in the SMLE I've seen here. One is a pin at the tip of which there's a whole through which a holding pin is inserted. The other is yours - just a pin pressed or punched in place, so you need a punch and hammer to drive it out. Can't remember from which side you have to hit it though. My guess is from the left side?

The later type appears to be a permanent assembly to me. The trouble is the strength of the spring under the leaf, which greatly impedes any attempt to remove either type of pin. I usually cramp the leaf so that it doesn't spring up as the pin is partially withdrawn.
