Rear sight won't come apart

Which is what I have been doing, it opens up about 2mm and then spins. Even gently inserting a screwdriver into the gap will not get it to release.

There is a small slotted nut on the pinion screw that you must, as Merlin mentions (Thanks M) undo first. Sorry, I'm tired and I think I have the flu!

Merlin, new match date is 22 March, Service Rifle!!

If I dont work like I had to this weekend,. I will be there. And I will be bringing some ex-South African army guys to come shoot as well (If all goes well)...

But ya, undo that little slotted screw and it should come off....

Is the elevation pinion already out? or is it still attached to the windage knob?

The sight is intact, nothing will come apart, just loosens up. I unscrewed the small set screw as indicted, then turned the windage knob counterclockwise to loosen, this gave me the 2mm mentioned. The elevation pinion is still in place, I undid it's set screw and tried to remove it as well, it won't come off. I think the problem is the windage knob is hanging up on something, but even the use of force does not make it let go. I don't want to damage the rifle, but can damage the sight if required.

Use a small pin punch from the right side and knock the pinion threaded end out. Mine hung up as well, one tap with the persuader and out it came. Looks like something was hanging up on a thread.

Nothing wrong with a measured bit of brute force and ignorance... just keep it measured! :D

Sometimes you also have to turn the slotted screw out more once you have threaded the windage knob out as far as it will go.

And THAT's the reality of the poorly made Norinco M14 rear sight components.

:ninja: They are great for a backup set to help your optics

Again... If you are serious about iron sight shooting (that's all I shoot with my M1 and M14 boomsticks), then obtain a set of M1 Garand sights from eGay... ;)

Well I used a small punch and through the set screw on the windage knob was able to gently drift the elevation knob out. Seems the threads on the elevation shaft wee buggered and were binding on the windage knob preventing it from coming apart. The Garand sights are on and will test it tomorrow.
