I was reading a few things about neat little features some service rifles have, such as the can opener and wire cutters on the IMI Galil, and at the bottom of the page of the following forum thread, someone spoke of the metal tab that is on the left side of HK G3 handguards. http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5321
The post was in 2000 and was never actually answered. I got curious and scrounged around the internet for about 30min without finding an answer... Does anyone know the purpose of it?

When properly slung the rifle will be carried waist high and slightly in front with no hands on the rifle.

I would have thought so, but its far too flimsy for use with a sling, atleast it seems so from the thickness of it... If it actually is a sling ring im gonna feel a bit dumb :/

You have to use the issued sling...before bill C-68 I had a HK91 that was legal to use for hunting...thats what it is for but you need the issued sling, worked great! :)

It's not a sling attachment point exactly, you shouldn't clip anything through that hole. Instead, it's a sort of hook. The HK 3-Point slings that were made specifically for the G3/MP5s etc had a sliding buckle on them. You used that tab to hang the rifle off that buckle, and it would hold the rifle close to your chest, so you could rappel, climb ladders, etc, without you having to tighten up the sling.

Andy McNab demonstrates it almost right away in this video

Jarvy, its not a hole, it's a clip ....a ring on the sling clipped into to it to hold the rifle at hands off ready.
