In a Remington Model 7 short action, which is chambered in the noted above cartridges, what other cartridges can it be rebarrled. Bolt head size is .534 therefore, can a smaller case head be used to shoot in this rifle? Ie: 284 winchester?

You can do a smaller case head with a sako extractor and pin in the bolt face to center the cartridge. It probably will not feed right through the wide receiver hole though. Or buy a smaller bolt face bolt. These complexities tell you that you should stay with the short fat cartridges and a rebarrel to 350 / 6.5 Rem Mag or PRC family will be easier if you can stomach shorter oals.

The 7 Saum in a model 7 is a great combo as is and not worth messing with imo. I have one, the second owner, that Mitch Kendall put together.

^^ Ditto.

You're better off staying with a short action magnum caliber. If it was the other way around, you could have your smith open the face up to become a magnum but its a little more complicated to go the other way.

The 284 Win is std Case head size EG 243-308 etc

I have a 284 in M7 but unless you machine the action and install a Wyatt longer mag box it’s only really suited for light bullets
Same holds true for the. M700 ! They both have short mag boxes .

SAUM CARTRIDGES are also too long for proper seating depths in a M7 or M700 without modifications.
M7 and M700 are best suited For Creedmoor lenght cartridges. 6CM or 6.5 CM. 22-250 Rem. 300 Savage works Well too

338 Fed or 358 Win are ok too with there lighter bullets as the bullets are short . RJ

iN THE END REALLY MAKES NO REAL DIFFERENCE IN A HUNTING RIFLE UP TO 400 YARDS OR SO ! LOL :d;)

Just need a STD bolt face bolt to convert to std Cartridges and then rebarrel and chamber .

Just a thought I had. I found this beautiful Model 7 however, best not to alter it to suite another cartridge, by the sounds of it.

I have a Model 7 in 7 SAUM (had one in 300 too). Preferred the 7. I have made brass from some 270 wsm I had laying around, just as an experiment. - dan

Thanks for you're reply. I'm on the wagon to purchase one or two firearms this spring, There are many which I like, one is the model 7 which I found, with georgous Black American walnut, unfortunately it only has a 20" barrel. I have 2 fully custom rifles and two others which have been re-barreled; I really don't feel like going through the process of another rebarrel.

6.5 saum??Laugh2
But really, probably a nice little cartridge

My blank will be here next for a 25 SAUM. Got a 1:7.25" twist coming, either going to spin it up on a Bergara or Tikka action and see what it does.

Something about 135 Berger Hybrids at 3150 fps +/- in a 22" barrel just make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside....Should be a hammer for the flatlands I hunt.
