Rebarrel a SKS?

Has anybody ever heard or attempted to re-barrel a SKS for a different cartridge?

I wonder how difficult it would be?

Been done, and talked about, .308 IIRC.

I'm not sure where the links are now as the search function sucks arse on this board.
 
Out of curiosity why would people wants to re-barrel the sks?

It never was a super accurate rifle and x39 ammo is so cheap ( at least for the time being) so why bothering re-barrel to different caliber?:confused:

i dont see any reason to either but then if they wanna do it then why not?

after all the chinese have mod the original design to the max so whats one more?

lets see, the chinese have shorten the barrel , made it to accept an AK mag, shoot a 5.56mm and they even tried making them to select fire .

I see, yeah that make sense this is our hobby and we can do anything we want!

Actually, if I am going to re-barrel the sks I would choice the largest bullet diameter possible and make it my perfect bush / bear defense gun.:D

Any idea which 40 / 45 caliber with work with the bolt face?
 
True, true!

But how can you know for sure is un-issued?

I bought two un-issued one from EE and another from Moving Target they both looks all original no refur marking and all numbers match and bolt face has hardly any marks (primer marks).

Do you think I can consider them un-issued?

I can not prove that it has not been fired or may be very few rounds and I read all your sticky but really how can you tell if they are real un-issued?:confused:
 
There have been re-barrels to 6.5x39 that have been fairly successful, tho I would think that 6x39 would be a better calibre, more able to use the full range of bullet weights.
 
Calum that would be my most favorite hunting rifle of all time I think. Accuracy & lightwiegt hell I would be rocking that rifle in the bush all day long.
