I have a Ruger m77 in 7mm mag. It doesn't need a new barrel. But I happen to have one in 30 06 If I wanted to have a smith swap them. Would I have any problems? Feeding, action work etc. Not planning on doing it. Just wanted to know if I could with out much hassle. Thanks fellas!

Dave.

It shouldn't be a problem. The two are very close in OAL. Not exactly practical though. You'd still have two M77's in the two calibres.

Magnum and standard bolt faces are different. The barrel shanks will be essentially the same, but make no assumptions about headspace, indexing (if iron sighs are installed), etc.

Quite a bit of "hassle"...

..as mentoned the bolt and extractor will not work, the magazine and the rails of the action may not work either...

Usually conversions are done in the opposite way, that is from a smaller cartridge to a larger one... and it can still be a "hassle". Usually more expensive than trading it in on what you want.

It would be a lot less hassle - and cheaper - to have the chamber of the '06 barrel re-chambered to 300 Win Mag. and then installed on your receiver.
