rebarrel s&w m10-5

The nice thing about M 10 S&W revolvers is that they all have barrel tenons with a 20-1 thread and are interchangeable from one model to another. Any smith with a lathe should be able to modify the barrel taken off another S&W revolver of the same caliber and after some very careful measurements should be able to fit it to your pistol. The thing is, finding take off barrels. S&W used to sell non threaded unfinished blanks but I don't think they have done that for quite awhile.

Turning a barrel out of a blank isn't that difficult. The big issue is machining the locking bin block under the barrel. It can be made up separately and brazed or silver soldered in place as long as it is done carefully. One other method is to turn down a barrel blank and use the existing barrel as a shroud to cover the new barrel. Of course this has to be done very carefully and it takes a lot of time. You need to ask yourself if it's worth the time and effort. At $50-$75 per hour lathe time plus disassembly and reassembly time and a blue job to match the usually lovely S&W finish, you could likely purchase a new pistol.

The people licensed to own those prohibs are getting long in the tooth. Many are going to the ranges in the sky and often those pistols are getting sold off for less than the parts are worth.

In all reality, if you can't find a replacement barrel or a take off barrel to fit and do it yourself it usually just isn't fiscally prudent.

I do my own. I don't do it for anyone else. The reason for this is there isn't any money in it. It's a good way to fix up something special but for a run of the mill M&P hardly worth it.
