Well afeter many years of service the barrel of my garand is showing sign of wear. The prior owner was using corrosive ammunition and was definatly lacking in the cleaning skills required so pitting is getting to be a problem. She is starting to be inconsistant on the bench, so it's not a error 5 ( error located 5 inch behind the rear sight....), using match ammo.
Now the question is: how mutch work would be involved to change the caliber from 30-06 to .308. I'm thinking of changing caliber because I already have all the reloading setup for .308 but not for the 30-06 and good quality ammo is getting expensinve and she is the only gun I own in 30-06.
Since I already need a new barrel as this one is shot out I was wondering just how mutch work it would be for the swap, what part would I need to change and if it's a job that needs to be done by an armorer or if a simple stait forward process. If machining is required that is not a problem at all (15 year experiance as a toolmaker...). My gunsmitting skills are limited but I am learning from the scool of hard knocks, I would of course have the gun inspected by a qualified armorer prior to making the firts trigger pull..(for obvious safety reason).
thnaks for the info
