Can anyone tell me if the bottom metal for a 700P in .223 is different (narrower) than that used for one in .308?

I currently have a 700P in .308 and am contemplating re-barreling to .223(realizing that I'll need to change bolts too)
I could just sell/swap for a P already chambered in .223 and get the match pipe installed, But I have ambitions of attemting to make a detachable mag conversion for it that would run off of altered LAR15 mags. I believe the lar mags would sqeak through the floorplate opening in my .308 P. but if the .223 floorplate was narrower that could put a kink in that idea...

The trigger guard assembly is the same. Magazine boxes and followers are different. Receivers are slightly different as well. But if you are going to a detachable box magazine that likely won't matter.
Yes, you will need a different bolt.
 
Feed rails differ.
.17/.222/.223 use the same receiver. A slightly different receiver used for .22-.250/.243.7mm-08/.308, etc.
 
Your best bet would be to just get another rifle - less mucking around in getting it to work.

The magazine issue has been solved by AI, they have a .223 magazine for their AICS - but it can be used in any system that uses AI magazines.

Just set yourself up with VBull/Badger/ATR bottom metal - add the .223 AI mags and you're GTG.

As they are centre feed, no issue with the feed lips.

Yes feed rails are different. Why because I did the same thing. 223 rounds will end up popping out from the box. I ended up using a single shot adapter anyway as it's an F-Class gun. It will go back to a .308 or PPC bolt once the barrel is shot out in any case. Unlimited F-Class in .223 doesn't make much sense these days.

Mag conversions don't matter then.
