rebarreling the .223 Savage

hello gents...
I have a silly question...
I have a .223 Savage, short action...
just as a question:runaway: , in order to convert this .223 to .308 is it enough to change the barrel, the bolt face and modefy the mag?????

Yep, that's about it. But I gotta ask why? By the time you pay for and ship a new barrel, bolt-face, savage barrel nut wrench and headspace gauges, you'd probably have enough for a new savage in 308. Certainly enough for a Stevens 200 in 308

P.S.: to prosper: do you think, Stevens 200 is as good as Savage 10???
 
Have a look at the length of the magazine cut in the bottom of the receiver. Will it accept .308 length cartridges?
Savage magazine boxes are sprung and swaged in place. The .223 box will likely be damaged if you have to remove it. You would need a barrel, bolthead, and probably a magazine box, follower and follower spring.
You may not need a barrel nut wrench. It is sometimes possible to use a large wrench with a pair of brass dowels to grab the barrel nut. If you have a heavy vice, you may be able to use hardwood blocks, synthetic bedded to the barrel, rather than a dedicated barrel vice. If the setup is particularly tight, though, you won't be able to remove the barrel with an improvised rig. You have to have gauges to install the new barrel.
I have 3 Savages, short, intermediate and long, and barrels in .223, 7mm-08 and 2 .308s, plus extra bolts and heads. Savages are extremely versatile.

Savage actions Pre-2000 utilized a barrel with a nominal barrel thread diameter
of 1.062". When Savage started chambering for the Super Short and Ultra
Mags in 2001, they began utilizing a slightly larger barrel thread diameter of
1.125". Standard magnum chamberings (i.e. 300 Winchester Magnum etc.)
were also fabricated using the larger barrel thread at that same time. All current
and subsequent Savage actions will be utilizing the larger 1.125" diameter
thread. At present, Adams & Bennett only offers barrels with the smaller
diameter barrel thread (1.062").​

You will need to change the mag box and follower. Brownell's will ship a .308 bolt head to Canada, and of course the box and follower.

A&B is on crack, the barrels are still the old small shank unless RUM or WSM.

My understanding directly from Savage is that you'll need a medium length magazine follower to replace the original and you'll have to take out that .223 follower block in the back. At least that's the experience I looked at with an FP in .223.

dies are cheaper and brass is easier to find. (sizing Fireball brass to 308 does not have a high success rate...)
 
Once you have the tools, it's super cheap to add more calibers. You don't need to buy a scope for each new caliber if you just switch barrels.

The question is how cheap can you get the barrels in Canada? You can buy take off barrels (unfired except at the factory) for $75US, but they won't ship to a Canadian address.

I've got a long action Stevens and a short action Stevens. There are other calibers I'd love to get for these actions if the cost is reasonable. With these two actions I could mount barrels for any factory calibers except RUM and WSM. Tell me that shouldn't be tempting to a gunnut? ;)

If anyone has a source of these barrels in Canada, or a cost-effective solution for getting them into the country from a seller that doesn't have an export license (or interest in doing the permits) I'd love to hear it.

To the original poster: Did you end up doing this?

was just asking for the Future...in case if I burn the barrel down and will rebarrel it to .308....

While this is back at the top, we should add that the new 12LRPV 's are all large shank and of course won't fit on any Steven's.
