I have an extra .223 that I am considering having rebarrelled. Just looking for chambering options that will match up to the savage action and boltface. Purpose of the build is for 1000m target shooting. Any advice would be appreciated.

That rifle would have a short receiver. Canada Ammo was carrying bolts as well as receivers from Remington.

Some folks swear they can shoot accurately out to 1000yds with the 308Win when it's loaded properly so that the bullet stays supersonic out past that range.

I would really suggest before you get into that game you look for a purpose built rifle from someone getting out of the game and selling their equipment. The long range game is addicting and extremely expensive. I hope you have deep pockets. It's also a very small segment of firearms enthusiasts. If you're looking for lots of companionship the long range game isn't where it's at.

The shooters along with their rifles are very dedicated and friendly people. They like to compete but they like to see great shooting abilities even more. They will usually share every bit of info they have and put you onto someone to get you further at every opportunity.

Get several thousand dollars together just to get started.

There are shooters who use .223 to 900m. You will need a quick twist barrel to stabilize long VLD bullets. I have shot .223 to 900m with 80gr. Sierras, and found that it is a bit more wind sensitive than the 155gr Sierras used for years for full bore target rifle shooting to that distance.
There are calibers that are much less sensitive to wind at long range, but you will need to swap the bolthead for the larger size.

I am with Tiriaq on this. Fast twist and heavy bullets.

I run a 28" heavy target 223 barrel in a 1:7 twist. Shoots 80-90gr through it up to 900 no problem, but if there is any kind of wind you better be a good reader.

I can't think of any 1000 yard guns that can use that bolt face. You could consider rechambering what you have to a .223 Ackley Improved. However, I'm not sure that is a really viable cartridge for that range. If you are able to change the bolt head, I would suggest the 6.5x47 Lapua, or the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I will be putting a 30 inch, 1:7" twist .223 barrel on this year. In all likelihood I will shoot this rifle out to 1000 yards for most of the year. Saving my .308 for the West Indies Champonships in Guyana next Oct.
A .223 shooting 80 gr bullet will shoot just as well or maybe a little bit better in the wind than a .308 shooting 155 SMK gr bullets. 90 gr bullets should be a little better than the Berger 155.5 Fullbore and the Berger VLD's and 155 gr Scenars.

I built my 260 off of a Stevens 200 in 223.
I basically changed everything except the bolt body and receiver.

-308 bolt head
-over sized knob
-shortened baffle
-nat lambeth bolt lift kit
-shillen 27" 260 barrel,
-Ptg lug
-choate stock
-sav 2 trigger

Shoots 5 into a dime at 100y

I'm glad I remembered this thread. Interesting.

I've shot heavy for caliber 223 bullets out of a 26in bbl out to 500m with good results but things seemed to go awry after that. Might be time to put that barrel back onto a receiver and see what I am doing wrong.
