Rebarrelling a Vanguard

Hey there guys.

Until about 10 minutes ago I was selling a 270 Vanguard S1 in Boyd's stock with a Timney trigger. I am now sick to death of selling guns, and all done with that. A newbie tire kicker with an infinitesimal trader rating and one post to his name actually asked for pictures of the *bore* just now. The money I would have gotten for the rifle is literally meaningless.

I've got no use for a 270 so I'm going to rebarrel (I want stainless). 35 Whelen or (if possible) 9.3x62. Probably 35.

Any suggestions on a barrel source? Gunsmith to use? Caliber to choose? Anything else?

Cheers!

Wby threads are metric so that is something to keep in mind with a smith. Not all of them do metric. You can try Bighorn Sales for benchmark barrels. There are also a few in the country that make barrels that are worth a look at as well!

If the barrel comes off undamaged and has a reasonable round count Bartledan, I may be interested in it. Right now I am leaning toward .25/06 or .35 whelen but if I go that route, it will likely be a take of rem 700 or similar that any good smith can fit to my Howa action.

Good point, although most gunsmith's worth the title should have the ability/equipment and knowledge to cut a metric thread...

Mystic Precision can get you Shilen SS barrels http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html
He could probably recommend a smith for you too. He's in BC as well.

Thanks man. I'll reach out. Long time, buddy! :)

I'd love a connection for a home-grown barrel. That would suit me very well, if their not gazillions of dollars. Thanks.

I'll let you know how it comes off/out. Cheers.

Hey Bart,
I got a 35 Whelen Shilen barrel from Mystic Precision last year. It was a semi bull, 22inch in stainless pre-threaded for a Savage action. Absolutley love it. It shoots superb... my 200 grain FTX load shoots .25 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards and my 225 Barnes TSX are just over 1/2 inch! Jerry is a great guy to buy from as he is very knowledgable and helpful with everything. I'm sure he could point you in the right direction.
There is a guy just around my area (of Saskatchewan) that bulids barrels... Ted Guiallard. I think he has someone else do the barrel assembly part though. Here is his website:

I had looked in his direction but he does not do 35 cals...
Let us know how the build goes as I have a Vanguard 2 in 257 WM which I know I will eventually burn the barrel out on as it is so much fun to shot:)
