I had Ron Smith do a barrel for me. It was a shot out 30 cal HBR barrel I bought from him several season previously. He fit it in with a run of 338 he was making up so I had to wait for six months to get it. From the way he talked if it hadn't been one of his barrels originally he wouldn't have done it. In the end, the cost saving was negligible to say the least.
I wouldn't do another one unless there was something significant about the rifle that required the original barrel to be retained.
The barrel Ron did for me was an excellent shooter but I wouldn't expect anything else from Ron.
