I have a older Series 1 Vanguard in 257 Wby. Mag. and have always liked the 270 Wby. Mag. but it's only offered in the Mark V which is quite a bit more expensive.

Would is be possible to have the 257 rebored and rechambered to 270 wby? I believe they use the same COAL, case head size and action length. I'm quite happy with the rifle and action as it is. There would be no need to restock or make any other modifications. I have already upgraded the factory trigger.

I'm wondering if this modification is possible and who in Canada would be able to perform the work. If possible I would assume the cost would be less than buying a new Mark V?

Thanks.

Don’t know of anyone that does that but probably cost as much or more than to have a new barrel chambered and installed,

I would buy a new aftermarket barrel like a Benchmark or IBI and have it chambered and installed, I think this would be a better approach, may cost a touch more with the cost of a new barrel but I think you would be much happier in the end.

Ron smith, and Bob jury both rebore. The last time I talked to Ron about it, it was substantially less money than a new one. But the place it really shines is with barrels requiring extra work like bluing, quarter ribs, sights and extractor cuts then it’s much more cost effective.

A barrel that doesn’t require those extra touches, I would take Weatherby fans advice and spring for a fresh tube.

I was at Ron Smith's shop this morning and spoke with him and his son, Gerald. They are making me a 1:20/1:10 right gain-twist 27" stainless steel barrel for my Weatherby Mark V, and then chambering it for the 257 Wby. Mag. Ron did mention that more people are re-boring their rifles in recent years, less money than a new barrel is probably the reason. You can give him a call and inquire: 1-403-631-2405. BTW, he did speak his mind on Weatherby firearms/cartridge. Twice he mention, "Weatherby's are over rated". I replied, "feeling is mutual regarding the 6.5 Creedmoor".;)

Thank you I appreciate the info. No doubt Weatherbys seem to have a love em or hate em reputation.
