Reboring to 9.3 (.366) in canada

My guess is he's turning a 30-06 (Pre64 Winchester maybe) into a 9.3x62.

Am I close?

Well i'll be darned if you didn't hit the nail on the head! All this talk of the .366 wagner got me thinking. And what better platform for a classic than a nice old winchester?

Nicely done sir, nicely done.

I'm only slightly surprised that I got it right. You think a lot like I do.

I didn't even think I was going to go through with it then all of a sudden an Echols legend stock and a pre-64 30-06 showed up in the mail!

Billdick, Where is this Carry Stricker located?

If an Echols stock shows up in the mail here it will likely be a complete accident. Though I do know where there is a Pre64 30-06 that is pretty plain jane and that a guy could rebore without the Gods killing you out of spite.

Any luck with the rebore? Curious if you found a place and what the costs were, thinking about changing a 30-06 as well

Well good news for those wanting a 9.3......
Ron Smith just tooled up to cut 9.3 !!!!!
So for those wanting a barrel done he is the guy to do it. Remember when talking to him
speak clearly as he is a bit hard hearing. He can be reached at 403-631-2405 an for those who don't know him.
Ron does both new and re-bores with cut single point rifling in any twist wanted, including gain twist.
Give him a call an enjoy.....

Well, I talked to Ron today, he didn't sound all that positive about it, for one he said he could do the bore but didn't have a reamer, for two he said he usually charges half the price of the reamer if he has to buy the tool, for three he said the 30-06 case is about 1mm longer then the 9.3x62 so either he has to take a bit more thread on the barrel to get it to fully run the reamer to it or make sort of a wildcat, and this wouldn't work with a barrel with open sights very well as that's harder to align, he also made a comment that if you wanted to try the wildcat isn route he wasn't gonna make any guarantees regarding accuracy.

Pretty much contradicting all the positive direction of this thread really, though he did say the 35 Whelen works quite well.

the difference in case lengths shouldn't matter because doesn't boring to .366 completely clean out the throat and neck of a 30-06 basically making it a blank canvas for a 9.3x62 reamer ?

Reboring and rechambering from 30-06 completely renews both the bore and the chamber. There is none of the old chamber left behind, as the 9.3X62 is larger in all dimensions.

Many years ago I had Les Bauska, in Kalispell, Montana, rebore a pre-war Model 70 to 9.3X62. It was a 270 Winchester that had been terribly neglected. Both the bore and the chamber were pitted so bad they looked like black concrete. The rifle came back sparkling like new in the chamber as well as the bore.

My son requisitioned the rifle after his lovely mother decided to keep his Ruger RSI. :) Both rifles are still killing big animals as well as when they first went afield.

Tell Ron you'll split the cost of the correct reamer, and never look back.

Ted
