reccomend me a .300 mag....

This:
150 gr. @ 3550 FPS :D
220 gr. @ 2990 FPS :D

Granted, for most applications a 300 win or even a 308 will suffice....but there ARE many things a 300 RUM or it's next door neighbour the 30/378 W can do that your winmag just can't....whether that be throwing heavy bullets at high velocity (My RUM packs more velocity/energy at 300 yards than an '06 does at the muzzle) or setting up a FLAT long range cartridge (Loaded with 160's, the gun can pretty mutch match a 22/250 trajectory wise...and can mimic the 25/06 with heavier bullets than that!)

So in short: At 400 yards or less, not a huge advantage other than being able to throw way heavier bullets than the win...but when you are stretching out past 400, that's where the rifle shines.

At my old moose camp we had a "range" set up in an old cut. Hitting (and decimating) 1 gallon water jugs at 789 lazered yards with 180 sirroco's was almost too easy.

What's funny about the whole "You are wasting powder/money with a RUM" crowd is that most of the naysayers shoot a 300 win....yet when you point out that their logic should apply to their own choice and ask them why they aren't shooting an '06 (after all, they are wasting powder/money with a winmag) there is all of a sudden a whole s**tload of reasons why the winmag is better ;)

The 300 RUM is to the Winmag what the Winmag is to the '06...it's a bigger, more powerful cartridge that shoots flatter, reaches further, hit's harder, and allows the use of heavier bullets without sacrificing velocity....do we need it? Most times no. Does it matter? Not at all. If we were only allowed to have what we "need", every gun would be chambered in 30/30 and .303

Answer your question? :D

I sort of baited you, but that is pretty much what I thought you were going to would say.

First off I have owned a 300 Ultra and I also own a 30 inch barreled 300/416R AI that is much faster than the 300UM.

Why do I like the 300Win?
Well for general purpose hunting I actually sort of prefer the 30-06. The only significant advantage the 300Win offers over the 30-06 is is the ability to more effectively use the high BC 200 grain bullets.
Which is of little use inside of 400 yards

The 300 Win. sends the 200's with unbelievable long range accuracy at 2950fps. While the 300 Ultra can send the 200's at similar accuracy at 3100fps, at ranges where it really matters I can't see any difference. In fact if I load the 300Win with with something like a 190 Berger or 200 Accubond it will have less wind drift and more retained energy that the 300 Ultra with 180 Sciroccos.
Other than impressing a noob buddy, 150 grain bullets are for 308 Winchesters.

Do your homework.

"Hitting milk jugs at 800 yards is almost too easy"
Well....I'll leave that one alone other than to say that once your dialed in there is no way you could tell the difference between a 300 Win and a 300 Ultra.

It's not that I don't like the 300Ultra (other than the short barrel life I do), but I think if you want more than a 300Win you need more bullet. The big 338's are the next logical step when the case gets that big.
I have a couple of 338Edge rifles and well...lets just say they are like another gear.

So essentially...we agree :D (I also pointed out that under 400 there is no advantage.)

I like the 220's myself, but I also agree that the step up to a larger bullet is the next logical step. I'ts kind of like my 22/250...sure it's heads and tails above the 223 (at extended ranges) but to really shine when stretching the legs I prefer the 243 middlestead.

I'm just a fan of the big and stupid fast 30's..300 rum, 30/378, 7.62 Lazroni....I love 'em all :)

If you search through my posts you'll see that I don't like "regular" cartridges....308/270/3006/300 winmag/etc. etc......in fact the only time 've ever owned one of those rifles it was always stamped AI after ;)

Shoot what you like and like what you shoot...it's all good.

my rem 700 police with detachable mag in 300win mag is the rifle i use for moose, bear and when on stand for deer. out to 400 yards unstoppable

I was in the same boat you are, looking for a cheapish 300 win mag just cause the cartridge is so impressive and I'd like to put some bullwinkle burger in my freezer I was going to buy a mossberg 300 win mag 4x4 synthetic in blue I liked the look. and reviews claimed MOA groups it has a free floating button rifled barrel detachable mag and all for just under 400 bucks thats what I would have bought but.... the gun gods were smiling on me and a Sako TRG-S in 338 Lapua mag with custom Schilen barrel brake and Harris Bipod extra mag 200rds reloading dies and hard case came my way for a fraction of what its worth so I sold my first born.

In my 30/416 AI I can see frosting in as little as 300 rounds.
Accuracy begins to leave around the 800 round mark and by 1000-1100 rounds the barrel is screwed. I have heard of guys getting more life from the 30-378, but I would not bet on it.

My Sendero contour 300Ultra stopped shooting at just under 900 rounds? They should last longer than that, but my (factory) barrel did not. I understand cut rifle barrels go around 1500 rounds?

A few guys over at Long Range Hunter use the 338/408CT and they maintain accurate barrel life is around 500 rounds!

To each his own as far as what caliber you want to shoot, i haven't shot a lot of larger bores, a .375 h&h a few times, but there seems to be a lot of magnums for sale and I wonder if people are just buying too much gun. No doubt they have their uses, but I think for most people it's a keeping up with the crowd purchase until they don't even want to pick the rifle up let alone shoot it anymore. I suppose it does make for some good deals on used rifles though.

but there seems to be a lot of magnums for sale and I wonder if people are just buying too much gun.

My favorite add from the Access a few years ago was:
"For Sale . . . MK-V .460 Weatherby, fired once . . . no reasonable offer refused".

Having said that, if a fellow has a good grounding in marksmanship, if he is competent shooting .30/06 equivalent cartridges in sporter weight rifles, then I see no reason why he would not be able to master a .300 Winchester or a .338. If I was looking for more than a .30/06 could do, I would choose a medium bore, but that's just me. A .300 Winchester is a very useful cartridge.
