Next year I was planning on trying tree stands. I've been looking at pics and such and like the ladder type with the seat at the top. What brands have you fellas used and what can a person expect to pay. I was also wondering if making my own would be cheaper. By the way I'm a fairly large fella at 6' and 200 ish pounds.

Hunter specialties makes a 15ft, 3-5ft section stand with a decent perch up top. Comes with a belt that will hold you. I bought a few and they were about $199 bucks. 45lbs.

Nice and steady to climb. Just like a ladder. Good angle on it too.

I just started hunting from a tree stand this year (used to hunt over Beagles - dogging in Ontario is GREAT !)

I'm a big bastard too 6'2" 210lbs.

I used a 'Big Game' treestand - model: the Boss XL

Actually I put up two of these stands. Got them on sale at Bass Pro for $99 each! With some solid pegs it's no problem. I shot a nice big buck in one that I had 20' off the ground. For sure I used the safety harness and it was super stable and quiet.

The best feature on this stand is the foot-rest (the bent-up few inches at the front of the platform). It was very comfortable.

I'm hooked on treestand hunting. I also saw coyotes, a fox, and numerous turkeys.

Good luck - SD

Lone Wolf tree stands are the best!!! Quiet, solid, comfy and will adapt to pretty much any tree. The Lone Wolfs cast platform is way better then anyone elses on the market (zero noise and very grippy). Check out their website.

Cheers!!

My brother has an Lone Wolf Alfa climber(which I have used),And I prefer my Summit Goliath S to it by far.The Summit is an all welded unit with no rivets,or bolts unlike the Lone Wolf.Although quiet when new I can see the holes in the Lone Wolf getting sloppy, and making noise.A problem that will never happen with my Summit.

I have a Big Game Luxury Box. Very well made and lots of room for one hunter. I particularly like the fact that there is room under the seat to put a pack and the foot rail is also a nice touch.

It is quite heavy, 105 lbs, and requires a couple of guys to safely set it up. By no measure would I consider it 'portable' - it goes up and stays where it is put.

I have no experience with the climbers but Have used the Lone Wolf Alpha hang on for a few seasons hunted every second or third day with it and its great. Every Lone Wolf owner I meet never uses anything else and have never heard of a problem with them.
Talk to some die hard archers who demand the best, the quietest, the lightest stands and you'll find them all using Lone Wolf stands.

Here's one reason I'll not be using a Summit

Sound-echoing hollow tube

Hollow tubes can become echo chambers, amplifying noise. One Little nick from a branch, arrow, bow or boot and you'll be hearing that "TING" in your nightmares for years to come.

If you're looking to use a tree stand for rifles ect.. a Summit will probably work well but when you need 100% silence you need to go elsewhere.
