Hey everyone,

My grandfather is currently moving into a home to be with my grandmother, so I got passed down a few things from him.

Anyway, I got 3 blades from him today (one more on the way, no details on that one yet). 2 of them are bayonets and one is a fixed blade. All of them appear to be pretty old, and not in terrible condition, and I have found some information on the first two. The last one, I can't find too much on so far, so was looking for opinions/information on it if anyone happens to know it. Basically, as someone new to the antique/collector's knife world, just hoping for some tips or opinions on how best to take care of them, or if I should not touch them and just store them. Not looking to sell them as they are a piece of my family.

The first one is a Cattaraugus 225q. Has some rust on it, but the blade itself seems like it is in overall good shape. The butt of the knife is a little loose as well. The handle is pretty smooth. I am thinking I will just use a fine steel wool on this and sharpen up the edge, I know it is a fairly common knife, so not really worried about ruining the value.

The next one looks to be a Ross Rifle Co Bayonet (1907 maybe). It seems to be in really good shape with barely any rust. Not sure what the other stamping means on the butt end.

Now the last is the tricky one, and it is massive. I think, from my research so far, it is a Swiss Rifle Bayonet, Model 1914 Pioneer. If anyone can correct me on that it would be great. Almost 2 feet long in total length, and the serration/saw back on it has to be about a 1/4" thick. I think the scabbard may not be the correct one, as it is a very tight fit, but I could be wrong.

Well, I hope I wasn't too long winded, just wanted to make sure all my facts were out there :D. Thanks in advance for any advice or information that can be provided, or suggestions on material I can read to find out more. If anyone wants any different pictures just let me know.

The Cattaraugus military utility knife and scabbard are fairly common. In the condition you show, maybe $50. Excellent specimens bring around $90.

The arsenal modified Ross should be worth around $125.

The Pioneer bayonet I don't know about. The ones I've seen for sale have always been to expensive for my pocket book.

If I may, I'd like to put in my 2 cents worth. The first knife is a Cattaraugas Knife Company survival knife. I used to have one (it was stolen) and it was one of the best camping knives I've ever had. I believe they were made for the U.S. Air Force. The second is a nice Ross rifle bayonet, and I think you have your answer on the third one. If it were up to me, I'd use 3 zero or 4 zero steel wool and a nice light oil to remove any surface rust and gunge. I'd treat the leather scabbard with mink oil or neats foot oil. I'd give the metal a light coat of oil and leave them be.

That isn't a survival knife, it is a utility knife that was issued through all of the arms of the services.

I have one in almost pristine condition and from what I could garner from serious collectors and a few other knowledgeable individuals, they will fetch up to $150 max.

You need to be really careful with the stuff and information on youtube.
