I just got a Baikal single shot rifle in .30/06. It's a very decent rifle for the cost. It's the second one I've had, the other being a .308 Win. and I think they are better than most people realize. The are strong and well built but not fancy at all. They are very light though.
What I am thinking here is I would like to have one in 7.62x39 for plinking with the cheap surplus ammo. I have not seen one in that caliber listed in Canada yet. They do list in 7.62x54R here. The 7.62x39 seems a natural and considering they are made in Russia, you would think it would be a standard.
Anyone have any idea how I could convert this .30/06 to 7.62x39? I don't see any reasonable way to set the barrel back. The only thing I can think of is to bore out an area to take the chamber out or ream it larger. Then fit in a chamber insert, a sleeve sort of affair with a 7.62x39 chamber cut in it. Any ideas or can anyone else see another way to do this?
I know the bore is .308" and the Russian round usually uses .311" bullets. That doesn't concern me. There would be other rifles easier to convert, but I think one of these little rifles would be great in this round. I already have the 7.62x39 reamer also.
Any ideas or alternatives? Remember, it's just a project and I don't intend to hunt with it or use it for anything serious. It's just for the challenge of doing it.
Wasn't there a chamber insert used by the US navy to shoot .308s from .30/06 Garands at one time? Anyone know how they worked?
