rechamber to 260?

Is there a easy to come by caliber that i could get rechambered in 260? Im looking at building a hunting rig that can reach out to 7-800m from a 700 or a vangard but cant afford to go balls deep rate off the bat.
Unless someone has a suggestion on other calibers that are in this range and a lil more common in off the shelf rifles?
 
I think a 260 is a great accurate cartrige but 800 yds is far to kill something like a deer.
From what I understand to do a clean kill on deer size game your bullet must deliver 1000 ft lbs of energy at the least.
I didn,t calculate how much energy would be left in a 140gr bullet at 800yds but I think it would not be enough.

Now a 308 with 180gr bullet like the speer 180 bt might get you closer .
 
Sounds like your a bit confused.
Rechambering is different than rebarreling.
You rechamber to a different cartridge to reuse a suitable caliber barrel and you rebarrel if you wish the caliber to be changed and chamber it to the cartridge you wish.

I haven't looked at the numbers either but for hunting at 700-800 yards I wouldn't even use a 308. I would personally be thinking something in the order of 338 Lapua. That is a long way to take a game animal and in my opinion the stakes are pretty high. I also have not done research on what cartridges might be suitable so I am not talking from a position of knowledge. Others will no doubt have more experience/knowledge to share with the OP.

I would want a cartridge that I know carries a lot of energy at that range and that is very accurate. Paper target accurate is one thing, a slight miss cost points only. Wounding an animal with a slight miss is another. Just my personal opinion. No at all trying to imply that the OP is not an ethical hunter or a marksman capable of hunting at that distance.

Nope. 6.5x47 Lapua is smaller. Lapua ammo:

Easy rebarrel from a 308. Factory target rifles available as well. Better bring patience and a fat wallet though:

I was plugging numbers into Bulletflight for 6.5x47 a while ago. Thinking sheep gun. 130 gr at 2800 fps still has 850 fp of energy at 700 meters.

Even smaller is the 6.5 Grendel. Hornady ammo:

Think magnum caliber. I would not be nervous with the energy my 300wm has at 800m on deer sized game. Any bigger game is a different story. Hand loads for a 7mm rsaum or somthing in that ballpark with heavy bullets should suit your wants.
 
Find somewhere you can actually shoot 700-800 yds. Walk it. See just how far that is. Then look at energy retention tables and see which catridge is capable of a minimum 1000 ft lbs at that distance. Get a rifle set up for that cartridge (actually there will be a few that fit the requirement). Then practice for a couple of years in all field positions, calm and out of breath. When you can hit an 8" paper plate repeatedly at those distances under varying conditions, you'll be ready to hunt deer at those distances. I wouldn't put a whole loty of stock in peoples' stories of shooting game animals at that range. I know a few people who can do it, but they are exceptional shooters using very accurate tools under special circumstances. FWIW - dan
 
I have to agree with Dan shooting those distances are hard to do ,I shoot F-class and we shoot those ditances but we have 2 sighters and target pullers so we know where we are hitting.

The only people I know of that kill anything at that range is the crew that hangs out at Tim Hortons.
 
Thats just a ballpark. The 7-800 would be on paper of corse! but i would like to be able to get out that far for practice. I would be hunting deer/sheep out around 500m. Unless it was something like a coyote i wouldnt be comfortabule to shoot much farther then that without more practice.

If i wont to hunt something larger like elk at a greater distance i would be useing my 300 wsm. i just wont something a lil smaller for deer/paper punching so i can get more time under my belt at greater distances and maybe recover a lil more meet off of a deer cuz the 300 is overkill and wastefull!
 
The 260 Rem is a wonderful caliber. I use it for F class, but mine has been reamed out to Ackley Improved, which gives it more powder capacity.

The 260 Rem is an off the shelf caliber. You should be able to find a rifle in that caliber.

Your original posting is unclear. If you already have a rifle with a 308 bolt face, then all you need to do is buy a take -off barrel in 260 or buy a new 6.5 barrel and have it chambered and threaded.

For more horsepower you could go with 6.5-284, but good luck finding ammo for it. It is a handloading caliber.
