Rechambering 300win

With minimum pain, a 300 Weatherby would be the way to go, a 300 RUM would entail bolt face modifications and feed rail issues as well. If you want a 300RUM better off to sell your existing and buy a factory one. If you really want zap in a 30 cal, try a 30-378 Weatherby. Pricey, but it doesn't get much warmer than this in a 30.

300 Rum is the only logical choice...bolt face is the same and they will feed, I've tried it, but you will only fit two in the mag box..factory RUMs will fit three..not a big deal,..at least it would not be to me...now the 30-378 will require a bolt face mod and it will not feed as is.

I have a Remington sendero in 300 win and would like to rechamber it to something with more reach. What would you suggest.

With a 26 inch barrel you would get a bit more velocity converting it to .300 Weatherby but not much. The magazine should feed okay.

Going to the Ultra Mag would gain a bit but nothing close to what you would get out of a 28 inch or longer barrel. The bolt face is okay as is but feeding from the magazine is a big problem on the conversion.

The .300-378 is not an option with a 700 action in my opinion. The .378 casehead is just too big. That cartridge also requires a 30 inch barrel to get good performance.

None of these cartridges really "reach" any farther, they are just a bit flatter shooting at the longer distances.

A good laser range finder would help you more.

Another vote for the 300 Weatherby. The RUM conversion will also require a new magazine box.

only if you have to have three down....I had a take-off 300RUM 700 barrel here a few months ago, I screwed it hand tight into a 700 action that had been a 7 Rem Mag...it fed the RUM cases into the chamber without a hitch....but,..it would only hold two in the mag.

Don't waste your time and money going to a bigger case if you are not going to get a longer barrel. Even your 300 win mag would benefit greatly from another 2". Just ask Rembo what a 300 win mag will do with 28.25" of barrel.

can you say 3400 with a 180?...I'm sure it's 28-5/8"..:D ..but we're splitting hares:cool:

we never did chrony "cccan''s 29-1/2" 300 Winny...:D

I too would favor a 300 win with a longer barrel, for several reasons. The 300 win for some reason is just plain old accurate period, with a28 " or longer tube you will get the higher velocities ( my 29" puts 200 grainer out at 3012 and my 32" puts 240 mks out at 3002) Barrel life is longer with the win over either the wby or rum, far more case maker options AND you KNOW the rifle will take the cartridge reliably.
What kind of more reach are you looking for?? I use my 300s for hunting and regularly kill moose at the 1000 plus yard mark, furthest to date 1140 yards and I shoot paper with them at 1500.
If more reach yet is wanted then maybe consider 338, 408 or 50 cal

I guess I will stay with what I have, the gun shoots 1/2 inch groups with 180gr bullets chronyed at 3100 fps. I am shooting deer out of a blind with a solid rest, the longest shot I would have to take is 400 yds. I really hate to change the barrel when I am getting the groups I am now. Does anyone know where to sight it in at 100 yds to get a point blank range for 400 yds on a deer?

180's at 3100 has been the standard handloaders velocity from a 300 Win Mag for eons...my own 24" sporter will do it with 74 grs of IMR4831....and with 1/2" groups at 100, I think you haven't a problem worth breaking out the RUM reamer over...breaking out the rum,..maybe:D ,..but not the RUM reamer:D

to sight in at 400 yards.....shoot your rifle at 400 yards...no better way to do it....any deer deserves at least that much....well,..they deserve a good cook, good spices and maybe a bit of HP also....:D

if you look at the difference in trajectory of a particular 180 launced at 3400, as opposed to 3100...I don't think you'll see a whole lot of difference until about 350 yards....way past the point of where most of us should be shooting anyway...at least way past the point of where I'll be shooting:rolleyes:

oh..one more thing...I almost forget....there's no way in he!! the 300 Win can be as accurrate as most users of the cartridge say....we all know that the neck is way too short:D :) :p

oops..looks like I hit the qoute button instead of the edit button...

You won't be able to get a 400 yard +/-3" PBR from that load. What bullets are you using? Do you have a range finder? Do you have the opportunity to practice at extended ranges? Because that is the only way you will really know where your rifle shoots. We can't tell you!

...

I can't tell you how many times I have heard that!! ;) Theoretically the 300 win should never have been produced, due to this inherrant flaw. Between the short neck and the belted cases it's a wonder the cartridge is even considered for serious shooting. PLEASE do NOT whisper any of these short coming to any of my guns, they shoot SO good and apparently ignorance is bliss for a 300
