Is it possible to rechamber a Carcano to a more common cartridge. 6.5X51mm Carcano is almost impossible to find, it would be nice to be able to buy ammo at Canadian tire or Walmart. What are some possible calibers and what would this approx. cost for a gunsmith to do?

6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer would be possible, but that is not CT or WM ammo.
There are no other practical options for rechambering.

I should have mentioned for use as a single shot, I realize it would be more dificult to make other ammo work with the clips.

The bolt face will not work with the .260 Rem and IIRC this is not a high pressure firearm so a 7.62x39 [requires new barrel] but ammo is available cheap.
6.5 Grendel or 6.5 PPC will work with original barrel, but ammo is expensive and dies.

chamber inserts

I found a guy in Alaska that makes chamber inserts to convert to different calibers, he e-mailed me saying he has a .25ACP and is working on a .22 LR. Can .25ACP be purchased in Canada is it prohibited along with the 25 and 32 pistols?

If you reload, it's easy (but you don't). Tradex has brass and bullets (and common 6.5mm 0.264" bullets can be used in a pinch) and Lee makes dies.

You have an interesting idea and a good discussion ensued, but there are multiple reasons why it's not a candidate for rechambering: e.g. bore diameter, boltface size, the magazine arrangement (uses clips), it's a poor candidate for scope mounting, etc. The action is very strong, certainly strong enough for 260 Rem pressures, but gas handling is not great.

I'd abandon the idea to rechamber it, and sell it and buy something else with commonly available ammo.

That's not rechambering - its rebarrelling. Works, but is more complicated than rechambering.

Yes it is, and yes it does.

I have all the parts ("Cooey Eatons Carcano", and Lee Enfield barrel), I'm just waiting for a local "amateur machinist" to have some free time and I'll git er done.

Compare the 7.62x39 to the 303 Brit round. Cut 0.600" off of the chamber end, re- thread and you're good to go. The neck will be a bit short (0.100") and the shoulder will be slightly "improved", but it will work just fine.

An interesting way to attach the barrel is like what is done for modern Savage firearms. Leave a barrel "stub" from the carcano barrel, and thread it and the Lee Enfield barrel so that you can screw it in until headspace is correct, and affix it correctly indexed with a set screw.

Yes, with careful fitting, a 7.62x39 reamer is not required. I've not done it that way, but have done the job setting the .303 barrel back a bit more, and finish reaming the chamber. I've done conversions on both the Lee Enfield and Cooey-Carcano.
I have noticed that with both Lee Enfield and Carcano conversions to 7.62, primary extraction can be a bit hard with steel cased cartridges.

A friend of mine rebarreled one to 35 Remington. It took a little fiddling with clips but, ultimately, it worked well. The Carcano seemes to be stronger than one might think and he loaded his 35 pretty heavily. Regards, Bill.
