Is having a rifle rechambered a big pain and big $cost$? I really like my Sako in 300 Win Mag but I've been thinking of having it rechambered/rebarreled to 338 Win Mag.

I'm just curious about the cost and process (ie, maybe it would be better to just save up for a new rifle).

Thanks for any insight! :)

Rechambering is about $200. However, going to a different bore size would entail re-barrelling, which is a fair bit more. Depending how much you spend on a barrel, you could easily approach $1k

I could be wrong but the 338 WM case shoulder is shorter than the 300 WM shoulder so you would not be able to just rechamber the barrel. The Smithy may be able to cut the barrel back if it has enough meat.

FWIW, Ron Smith has rebored a barrel for me, he does great work and is very reasonable. 403-631-2405
He is usually on the shooting circuit in the States now so you may have to wait until fall to catch up with him.

Thanks guys. Well, that pretty much confirms what I was thinking. Too bad it's not as simple as rechambering it to something I'm more interested in. Nothing wrong with the 300WM, mind you...I've hunted with it quite often. Guess I'm just looking at options for something new. :)

No problem with something new!! Just a thought, the 338 is a step up from the 300 but not a great one! So why not go to something really different!! May a 375 H&H or a 358 Norma Mag!!

Like I said, just a thought!!
