Hi,

Does anyone here know what it would cost to have a stock Ruger stainless hammer forged barrel "set back"? ie: re-chambered and re-crowned? And where in Canada could I get this service? (I wonder if Dlask could do this)?

I'm curious, as i'm told i could prolly get my stainless heavy barreled ruger shooting much better with this done.

thanks for now,

Just about any smith should be able to do that. Not being a threaded barrel should mean its not as expensive as similar work on a centre fire.

With aftermarket barrels being widespread and not terribly expensive I would compare the cost of a new barrel to the cost of having the work done before settling on a course of action.

yeah, your prolly right. i guess if i were to go this route, it would be because i would want to keep it as original as i could. Ive been reading that the .920 stainless hammer forged barrels are excellent shooters after being set back.... they say Ruger is juat a tad on the sloppy side when it comes to the chamber, so its not too ammo finicky i guess....

I cant believe this is all thats available in Canada.... "Buy a new barrel". At rimfirecentral.com there is a thread dedicated to this exact same question. There seem to be a number of guys there who will set back a barrel, and re crown for approx 80.00 -100.00 US, and the guys who have had it done state the factory barrel will out shoot almost any aftermarket barrel. Here's a c&p from there....

----c&p-----
Tom, there are a few guys here that have been re-chambering and re-crowning factory pegs for years. Nemohunter probably did the most(thousands) and I have one of his barrels. It shoot's under a quarter inch at 25 yards and cost about $80. Nemo has gotten caught up in "life" and has had to stop taking orders, and I don't know if he will have the time to start up again. Que has stepped up to the plate and filled that void and does outstanding work.

First the breech is machined off, then a new Bentz type chamber cut, then the barrel shoulder is shaved to match the amount taken off the breech. When the barrel is re-installed a shim is used to take up the slack of the machining. A re-crown is included in the "package". Nemo also used to offer hand lapping of the bore for an additional price and that made his barrels even more accurate. A properly done re-chamber, re-crown and lapped oem barrel can and will run with the most expensive aftermarket barrels out there.

Why do this to a factory taper barrel? Less weight, still looks factory(sleeper), and way cheaper than buying a mediocre aftermarket barrel.

-----End-----

This is what i'm talking about. I'd have no issue paying 100+ to have this service done on my factory unit. Instead of just replacing the barrel.
