I am interested in a 20 vartarg ( 20VT), but don't have the cash for a cooper m38.

So, am thinking about starting with a savage model 12 single shot in 204 ruger, remove and cut the barrel, then rechamber to .20 VT.

Is there a gunsmith in Canada that has the reamer and can do it for a reasonable cost?

thanks in advance

Remember that you will still have a factory barrel even after you spend the money on recutting the chamber.

I would recommend giving Mysticplayer a call and order a Shilen prefit (they offer the 20 Var Targ) Then you will have the accuracy and easy cleaning of a match barrel and not need of a gunsmith. I am sure that in Calgary you can find a CGN member to loan you the tools to do a barrel swap. The time taken by a gunsmith to remove and rechamber a factory barrel will cost you some real coin, thier time is valuable.

That also leaves you with a factory take off barrel that you can sell on the EE, plus you need not find a .204 Ruger donor rifle, the more common .223 will work, (or any with the small bolt face)

While factory Savage barrels are decent they cannot compare with any aftermarket offerings.

The .204 is 450 thou longer than the Vartarg. You'd have to cut the chamber end of the barrel and rechamber.
Reamers can be rented without much fuss. What you consider to be 'reasonable' matters too. Epp's smithy starts at $125.

We sell Pac-Nor Savage pre-fit barrels in 20 VarTarg. I guess my question would be why do you want to go to the expense of all new dies and brass for a cartridge that is less versatile for larger 20 cal bullets?

I am a 204 Ruger fan. I love it.

Be very careful of twist selection. Best to select one general range of bullet weights/lengths and buy your barrel accordingly.
