Rechambering a Stevens?

I've got a Stevens 200 in 223Rem that is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I've got something like 700+ pieces of once fired brass.

I wouldn't mind having a little more punch for coyotes out past 350 in the future. Rather than buying a whole new setup and new brass etc, I'm considering having this reamed out to 223AI. I've been told I can still hunt with accurate 223Rem loads, and it will fireform the brass while I'm shooting anyway.

It sounds like a good idea to me if the cost of the rechamber isn't too high. What should I expect it to cost?

TIA

Give Guntech a shout. Odds are it will be under $150.

I really don't think 100fps is going to be the deal breaker. A 223 is plenty fast if the right combo of bullet and powder is used.

Load up some 75gr Amax over Benchmark or varget and you have a 500yds 'yote getter.

Yeah Jerry, I know it's not a big difference. :)

I'm just considering it as a cheaper way to scratch the itch that I get from time to time for a "faster flatter" shooter. After all this rifle already has the rifle basix trigger, scope and a mountain of brass. All I'd need would be a set of dies and the chamber job.

I'm not sure if I'll do it, but I wanted to know the cost before I decide.

And a new bolt head. Maybe an extra $50.

I'd just get the 22-250 Stevens, myself, unless I was LOOKING for a fast-twist 22-250

Since you bring it up, what bullet weights does the slower twist barrel do well with in the 22-250?

I had Bill Leeper rechamber my Stevens to 223 Ackley. It sends 40 gr Ballistic Tips on their way at 3900 fps and 75 gr A-Maxes at a tad more than 3000 fps.

Factory Winchester white box 45 gr ammo shoots into half an inch, and fire forms perfectly, of course, while doing it.

This in the factory 1:9 twenty-two inch barrel.

It is defintely worth doing.

ck, Savage IS releasing a 9 twist 22/250 this year. Not sure which styles of rifles they are putting it in but I would expect it to be well represented.

The success they are having with the 9 twist 223 is driving this direction. A definite advantage over Rem, Win, Ruger 12 twist.

They will also have a 7 twist 223 in HB competition models.

Lots more options coming your way. There was a '06/308 bolt head offered on the exchange forum. With that you can do anything you want. Mag boxes and followers are available direct from Savage. They will not send bolt heads.

Thanks for the heads-up Jerry, I hadn't noticed that. :)
